Amiodarone is a benzofurane derivative which contains an appreciable amount of iodine (37%). It is used in cardiology as an antianginal and antiarrhythmic drug. Using guinea-pigs and rats as the animal model systems, the effects of amiodarone on normal and hyperplastic thyroid glands were investigated in eu- and hypothyroid animals. After the amiodarone treatment, considerable differences were observed in the levels of thyroid hormones and in the structure of the gland which proved dependent not only on the length of treatment, but also on animal species and the functional status of the gland before treatment. At extended amiodarone application, the rats with hyperplastic thyroid developed microlesions in epithelium of some follicles.

Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is a frequently metastatic tumor of the thyroid that develops from the malignant transformation of C-cells. These tumors most commonly have activating mutations within the RET or RAS proto-oncogenes. Germline mutations within RET result in C-cell hyperplasia, and cause the MTC pre-disposition disorder, multiple endocrine neoplasia, type 2A (MEN2A).

This study aimed to explore the diagnostic value of the two cytology techniques, including liquid-based cytology of mammary ductal lavage fluid and nipple discharge smear cytology, in the intraductal lesions in patients with pathological nipple discharge (PND). This retrospective analysis included 119 patients with PND who underwent surgical treatment. At the same time, they all underwent fiberoptic ductoscopy (FDS), nipple discharge smear cytology and liquid-based cytology of ductal lavage fluid before surgery.
