Introduction: Sepsis is an uncontrolled systemic response to infection that leads to life-threatening organ dysfunction. The in-hospital mortality rate remains significantly high in septic shock patients with malignancies. This study investigates whether early and high-volume administration of sodium bicarbonate during continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) can reduce 28-day mortality, increase shock reversal rates, and shorten the duration of CRRT, mechanical ventilation, and intensive care unit (ICU) stays.

Objectives: A rising incidence of septic shock as well as recommendations for early vasopressor initiation has increased the number of patients eligible for norepinephrine (NE). Traditionally, NE has been administered through central lines, in intensive care units, due to the risk of extravasation in peripheral lines. The aim of the current study is to determine the rate of complications and patient outcomes when NE is administered through midline catheters (MCs) in intermediary care units (IMCUs).

Epidemiology and Resistance Profiles of Bacteria Isolated from Blood Samples in Septic Patients at Emergency Department Admission: A 6-year Single Center Retrospective Analysis from Northern Italy.

J Glob Antimicrob Resist

January 2025

Humanitas University, Department of Biomedical Sciences, Via Rita Levi Montalcini 4, 20072, Pieve Emanuele, Milan, Italy; IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital, Via Manzoni 56, 20089, Rozzano, Milan, Italy.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the microbiological and clinical heterogeneity of community-onset bloodstream infections (BSIs) and identify features to support targeted empirical antibiotic therapy in the Emergency Department (ED).

Methods: Clinical and microbiological data from 992 BSI cases (1,135 isolates) diagnosed within 24 hours of ED admission at IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital, Milan, Italy (January 2015-June 2022), were analyzed. Drug resistance was interpreted using EUCAST-2023.

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, U1008 - Advanced Drug Delivery Systems, Univ. Lille, CHU Lille, INSERM, Lille, F-59000, France.

Introduction: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) septic arthritis is a rare frequently misdiagnosed condition with non-specific symptoms. We present our experience of thirteen cases of TMJ septic arthritis and perform a systematic review of the literature to collate the multiple characteristics of this condition.

Material And Method: A total of 133 cases of TMJ septic arthritis in humans across 62 studies were analyzed by searching PubMed, Cochrane Library, DOAJ and ClinicalTrials.

Background: Glycemic variability (GV) is the third domain of sepsis-induced dysglycemia, after hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia, potentially leading to adverse outcomes. This study analyzed the association of GV with in-hospital mortality and length of stay (LOS) in non-diabetic sepsis patients.

Materials And Methods: In this prospective observational study, non-diabetic sepsis patients were followed till day 14 of hospital stay, and blood glucose levels were assessed by finger-prick method (seven times per day) daily; clinico-laboratory and GV parameters [standard deviation (SD), coefficient of variation (CV), mean amplitude of glycemic excursion (MAGE)] were assessed on days 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, and 14 of admission.
