Published: November 1993

Researches carried out at Cîmpulung-Lereşti-Lăicăi from the north of the Argeş County demonstrated an environmental iodine-deficiency that caused thyroid hypofunction in animals and, consequently, a decrease in the iodine level in the products of animal origin. Administration of KI, KIO3 or of sea weeds powder in the cows nutrition corrected the thyroid function, the quantitative increase in milk production and enrichment of milk in iodine.

Objective: It has been established that iodine prophylaxis prevents endemic goiter. In this study we reported the amount of iodized salt sold by the retailers of Cassino, a city of central Italy. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of an iodine prophylaxis program started in 2005 on urinary iodine concentration (UIC) and thyroid volume (TV), and their correlation with anthropometric parameters in a population of schoolchildren.

The effectiveness of iodine containing additives on the basis of whey protein and milk protein casein compared to iodized salt in the composition of meat minced semi-finished products for child nutrition was examined in the experiment on laboratory animals. Four variants of the semi-finished products were investigated: 1 - control; 2 - enriched with iodine containing milk protein casein; 3 - enriched with iodine containing whey proteins; 4 - enriched with iodized salt. The semi-finished products were enriched at the level of 15% of the daily norm of iodine requirement for children at the age of 7-12 years.

The question arises as to whether this 'silent iodine prophylaxis' affected also the neonates.

Improved legislation (1989, 1993), as well as education of the public, are likely to improve the iodine supply for the German population. Children and adolescents will be the first to profit. We investigated thyroid size and urinary iodine excretion in a total of 2906 students aged 10 to 18 in Mecklenburg-West-Pomerania in 1993, 1995, and 1997.
