The haptoglobin phenotype was determined in 2609 blood samples collected from every Hungarian county. The results of the nation-wide survey are in agreement with those of a series of previous studies in which only Budapest inhabitants were investigated. However, a statistically significant difference was found in the haptoglobin phenotype frequency and distribution of people living west and east of the Danube. A lower HP*1 frequency was observed in the inhabitants of the eastern part of Hungary when compared to those living in the western part.

Background/aim: The genetic polymorphism of haptoglobin (Hp) has been associated with several cardiovascular risk factors, but a possible relationship between Hp phenotypic variation and increased levels of homocysteine (Hcy) and cysteine (Cy) is still unknown. The objective of this study is to evaluate the relationship between the Hp polymorphism and hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) and hypercysteinemia (HCy) in type 2 diabetics (T2D) with and without angiopathy (AGP).

Methods: A case-control study was carried out on 293 adults: Group I (GI) - 75 subjects with T2D and AGP; Group II (GII) - 75 subjects with T2D without AGP; Group III (GIII) - 143 controls.

It has remained yet unclear which soluble factors regulate the anti-inflammatory macrophage phenotype observed in both homeostasis and tumourigenesis. We show here that haptoglobin, a major serum protein with elusive immunoregulatory properties, binds and buffers bacterial lipopolysaccharides to attenuate activation of NFκB in macrophages. Haptoglobin binds different lipopolysaccharides with low micromolar affinities.

Article Synopsis
  • In the ACCORD study, those with the haptoglobin 2-2 phenotype and high levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA) showed a greater risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) compared to others with lower HbA levels, while this risk was not evident in those without the Hp2-2 phenotype.
  • The main goal was to see how different levels of HbA impact CAD risk among people with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) based on their haptoglobin phenotype, using data from the Look AHEAD study.
  • Results indicated that lower HbA levels (less than 6.5%) reduced CAD risk among non-Hp2-2 individuals, particularly in specific sub

Background: There is increasing evidence implicating hemoglobin/heme and their scavengers in oxidative stress-mediated pathologies, but information is limited in abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).

Methods And Results: In this case-control study, we assessed heme/heme-related markers in 142 men with AAA and 279 men with a normal aortic diameter consecutively recruited from an ultrasound screening program in Sweden. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) were used to measure heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and hemopexin (Hpx) plasma levels, colorimetric assays for cell-free heme and whole blood hemoglobin (Hb) levels, and droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) and real-time PCR to determine haptoglobin (Hp) (pheno)type and genotype, respectively.

Aims/hypothesis: In diabetes haptoglobin (Hp) 2 vs Hp 1 allelic product is associated with cardiac and renal complications. Few studies report both Hp phenotype and Hp levels. In a Fenofibrate Intervention and Event Lowering in Diabetes (FIELD) trial substudy we evaluated the Hp phenotype, Hp levels, and fenofibrate effects.
