Background And Purposes: The fungi known as dermatophytes are a group of keratinophilic agents responsible for superficial infections in humans and animals. Recognition of the species distribution and epidemiology of dermatophytosis may be helpful in the prevention and improve prophylactic measures. The present molecular epidemiology study sought to investigate the incidence of etiological agents causing dermatophytosis.

Invasive Fungi Research Center, Communicable Diseases Institute/Department of Medical Mycology, School of Medicine, Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences, Sari, Iran. Electronic address:
Keratinophilic fungi, or dermatophytes, are recognized as the predominant fungal agents responsible for superficial skin diseases globally. The identification of species of dermatophytes is crucial for both therapeutic and epidemiological considerations. The primary objective of the present study was to investigate the epidemiology of dermatophytosis among patients who sought medical attention at the medical mycology laboratory in Golestan province.

Core Facility Bioactive Molecules, Screening and Analysis and Research Platform Bioactive Microbial Metabolites (BiMM), Konrad Lorenz Strasse 24, 3430, Tulln an der Donau, Austria.
Screening for new bioactive microbial metabolites, we found a novel okaramine derivative, for which we propose the trivial name lemmokaramine, as well as two already known okaramine congeners - okaramine H and okaramine J - responsible for antimicrobial activity of the recently described microscopic filamentous fungus, Keratinophyton lemmensii BiMM-F76 (= CCF 6359). In addition, two novel substances, a new cyclohexyl denominated lemmensihexol and a new tetrahydroxypyrane denominated lemmensipyrane, were purified and characterized. The compounds were isolated from the culture extract of the fungus grown on modified yeast extract sucrose medium by means of flash chromatography followed by preparative HPLC.

Microbes within a consortium exhibit a synergistic interaction, enhancing their collective capacity to perform functions more effectively than a single species, especially in the degradation of keratin-rich substrates. To achieve a more stable and efficient breakdown of chicken feathers, a comprehensive screening of over 9,000 microbial strains was undertaken. This meticulous selection process identified strains with the capability to degrade keratin effectively.
