Catch bonds are molecular bonds that last longer under force than slip bonds, which become shorter-lived under force. Although catch bonds were initially discovered in studies of leukocyte and bacterial adhesions two decades ago, they have since been found in many other contexts, including platelet binding to blood vessel walls during clotting, structural support within the cell and between cells, force transmission in the cell's machineries for motility and mechanotransduction, viral infection of host cells, and immunoreceptor mechanosensing. Catch bonds are strengthened by increasing force, which induces structural changes in one or both interacting molecules either locally or allosterically to enable additional contacts at their binding interface, thus lengthening bond lifetimes.

The testis-specific BET protein BRDT structurally resembles the ubiquitous BRD4 and is misexpressed in cancer, and we show that BRDT misexpression may affect lung cancer progression. BRDT knockdown in lung cancer cells slowed tumor growth and prolonged survival in a xenograft model. Comparative characterization of PTEFb complex participation and chromatin binding indicates BRD4-redundant and BRD4-distinct BRDT functions.

Vitamin B12 (B12) is essential for DNA synthesis in all cells and for the development and maintenance of a healthy nervous system. B12 is transported in the circulation bound to two carrier proteins, haptocorrin and transcobalamin, measured as the biomarkers total B12 and holotranscobalamin (holoTC). The latter measures the fraction of cobalamin available for tissue uptake and is considered to have a better sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing vitamin deficiency.
