Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzed 3847 patients who suffered from a transient ischemic attack or minor ischemic stroke, focusing on those without traditional risk factors (like hypertension and diabetes) to compare their outcomes with those who did have risk factors.
  • - After one year, the risk of major cardiovascular events (MACE) was similar between the two groups, but after five years, those without traditional risk factors had a significantly lower risk of MACE (7.9% vs 13.9%).
  • - In patients without traditional risk factors, arterial stenosis was identified as a critical predictor for MACE, indicating that while their long-term risk was lower, they were not entirely without risk.

Article Synopsis
  • Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) is a rare genetic disorder that often comes with various issues related to the ears, nose, and throat, including a higher rate of conditions like chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP).
  • A literature review and a case study of an 8-year-old boy with CdLS and CRSwNP revealed that traditional medical treatments were ineffective, leading to successful surgical intervention for his nasal obstruction.
  • Additional research indicates that CRSwNP is more common among CdLS patients compared to the general population, and suggests that a combination of medical and surgical approaches can effectively manage this condition.

Purpose: This study assessed the incidence of postsurgical intraocular inflammation after cataract extraction by phacoemulsification and implantation with AcrySof IQ ReSTOR intraocular lenses (IOLs) produced using an updated manufacturing process. Incidence rates were compared with historical rates of postsurgical intraocular inflammation.

Methods: This was a prospective, multicenter, post-approval study at 34 sites.

Background: The aetiology of delirium is not known, but pre-existing cognitive impairment is a predisposing factor. Here we explore the associations between delirium and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs), proteins with important roles in both acute injury and chronic neurodegeneration.

Methods: Using a 13-plex Discovery Assay®, we quantified CSF levels of 9 MMPs and 4 TIMPs in 280 hip fracture patients (140 with delirium), 107 cognitively unimpaired individuals, and 111 patients with Alzheimer's disease dementia.
