The small intestine's barrier functions are reviewed. The data on mechanical (passive) and active protective systems of the organism against various antigens, toxic substances and proteins, is presented. An important role of these protective systems as an enzyme apparatus of epithelial and postepithelial layers of the small intestine's mucose, is shown.

This condition results in hypoalbuminemia, hypogammaglobulinemia, and lymphopenia due to the abnormal leakage of lymphatic fluid into the gastrointestinal tract. As there are no specific serological or radiological tests available, the gold standard for diagnosing intestinal lymphangiectasia is endoscopic examination with histopathological examination of intestinal biopsy specimens.

The broad ligament, a double-layered peritoneum attaching the lateral uterus to the pelvic sidewall, plays a vital role in pelvic anatomy. Small bowel herniation through a defect in the broad ligament, known as broad ligament herniation, involving protrusion of viscera through defects in this ligament, is rare but can lead to severe complications. This systematic review aims to evaluate the presentation, diagnosis, management, and factors associated with broad ligament herniation.

Xylooligosaccharides (XOS) ameliorate insulin resistance (IR) in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) probably by propagating Akkermansia muciniphila (Akk). This study aimed to investigate the effects and mechanisms of XOS, Akk and combination on IR in GDM mice/pseudo-germ-free (PGF) mice. Female mice were fed with AIN-93 (n = 19) and high fat diet (HFD) (n = 206).
