Persistent hiccups are rare but can serve as an early symptom of underlying conditions, including pulmonary infections and cerebrovascular disorders. This case highlights hiccups as a presenting symptom of bronchopneumonia in a hemodialysis patient and explores the effective use of chlorpromazine and Hange-koboku-to (HKT) as symptomatic therapies. Given the potential association of hiccups with neurological conditions, this case underscores the need for comprehensive diagnostic evaluation.

First Episode Psychosis in a Teen with Narcolepsy and Cataplexy.

Psychopharmacol Bull

January 2025

Abhishek Reddy, MD, Assistant Professor, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Sleep Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, Roanoke, VA, United States.

Article Synopsis
  • Narcolepsy with cataplexy (NT1) is a rare sleep disorder that can be linked to early-onset psychosis, particularly in kids and teens.
  • After excluding other medical issues, an adolescent girl with NT1 was initially diagnosed with a brief psychotic episode and treated with Risperidone.
  • Her symptoms improved significantly after switching to Chlorpromazine, marking one of the first successful uses of this drug for managing first-episode psychosis in a patient with NT1.

[Absorption mechanism of iron oxide nanoparticles in Caco-2 cell model].

Wei Sheng Yan Jiu

November 2024

West China School of Public Health, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610041, China.

Objective: To explore the possible mechanism of absorption of iron oxide nanoparticles into the human body through the gastrointestinal tract.

Methods: This article used Caco-2 monolayer cells as a cell model, prepared characterized iron oxide nanoparticles(Fe_2O_3 NPs) as suspensions, and intervened in Caco-2 cells. CCK-8 method, transwell method, and atomic spectrophotometer method were used to explore the effect of Fe_2O_3 NPs on the activity of Caco-2 cells and the absorption and transport of them through the Caco-2 monolayer cell model.

Nuclear Control of Mitochondrial Homeostasis and Venetoclax Efficacy in AML via COX4I1.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

December 2024

Department of Systems Biology, Beckman Research Institute, City of Hope, 1500 E Duarte Rd, Duarte, CA, 91010, USA.

Cell signaling pathways are enriched for biological processes crucial for cellular communication, response to external stimuli, and metabolism. Here, a cell signaling-focused CRISPR screen identified cytochrome c oxidase subunit 4 isoform 1 (COX4I1) as a novel vulnerability in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Depletion of COX4I1 hindered leukemia cell proliferation and impacted in vivo AML progression.

Addressing brain metabolic connectivity in treatment-resistant schizophrenia: a novel graph theory-driven application of F-FDG-PET with antipsychotic dose correction.

Schizophrenia (Heidelb)

December 2024

Section of Psychiatry, Laboratory of Molecular and Translational Psychiatry, Unit of Treatment-Resistant Psychiatric Disorders, Department of Neuroscience, Reproductive Sciences and Dentistry, University of Naples "Federico II", School of Medicine, Naples Italy, Via Pansini 5, 80131, Naples, Italy.

Few studies using Positron Emission Tomography with F-fluorodeoxyglucose (F-FDG-PET) have examined the neurobiological basis of antipsychotic resistance in schizophrenia, primarily focusing on metabolic activity, with none investigating connectivity patterns. Here, we aimed to explore differential patterns of glucose metabolism between patients and controls (CTRL) through a graph theory-based approach and network comparison tests. PET scans with F-FDG were obtained by 70 subjects, 26 with treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS), 28 patients responsive to antipsychotics (nTRS), and 16 CTRL.
