Frailty in kidney transplant candidates: new therapeutic strategies to intervene.

Curr Opin Organ Transplant

January 2025

Department of Kinesiology and Health Sciences.

Purpose Of Review: Patients that present with a physical frail phenotype have a higher risk of poor kidney transplant outcomes and are therefore less likely to be wait listed for a transplant. The physical frailty phonotype is more prevalent in older adults >65years with chronic and end stage kidney disease, thus partly contributing to inequitable access to transplant. Frailty can potentially be reversed by prehabilitation.

Osteopetrosis is a rare genetic disorder that leads to increased bone density and fragility due to dysfunctional osteoclasts, which can result in narrowed bone marrow spaces, hardened cartilage, and brittle bones. This condition frequently coexists with osteoarthritis among affected individuals. When osteoarthritis results in significant pain and impairs function, surgical interventions such as total joint arthroplasty may be recommended, although these procedures come with a unique set of surgical and recovery-related hurdles.

The impact of preexisting psychiatric disorders on patient outcomes following primary total shoulder arthroplasty: A systematic review and quantitative synthesis.

Shoulder Elbow

January 2025

Sunnybrook Orthopaedic Upper Limb (SOUL), Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, Department of Surgery, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada.

Purpose: To summarize complication rates, reoperation rates, length-of-stay (LOS), patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), and range of motion following total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) in patients with preexisting psychiatric disorders (PDs) compared to controls.

Methods: Three databases (MEDLINE, PubMed, and EMBASE) were searched from inception to 4 March 2024 to identify studies comparing outcomes between patients undergoing anatomic (aTSA) or reverse TSA (rTSA) with or without a preexisting psychiatric condition. The authors adhered to the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses and revised assessment of multiple systematic review guidelines.

Background And Aims: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurrence was previously characterized into four types, and patients with progression/hyper-progression recurrence (type III-IV) have an extremely poor prognosis. However, the immune background of resectable HCC, particularly in patients who experience recurrence, remains underexplored. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the immune landscape of resectable HCC, especially postoperative type III-IV recurrent HCC, and explore potential immune-targeted anti-relapse strategies for treated populations.
