Topological Moiré Polaritons.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

Clermont INP, Institut Pascal, PHOTON-N2, Université Clermont Auvergne, CNRS, F-63000 Clermont-Ferrand, France.

The combination of an in-plane honeycomb potential and of a photonic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) emulates a photonic or polaritonic analog of bilayer graphene. We show that modulating the SOC magnitude allows us to change the overall lattice periodicity, emulating any type of moiré-arranged bilayer graphene with unique all-optical access to the moiré band topology. We show that breaking the time-reversal symmetry by an effective exciton-polariton Zeeman splitting opens a large topological gap in the array of moiré flat bands.

Relations between trajectories of weight loss and changes in psychological health over a period of 2 years following bariatric metabolic surgery.

Qual Life Res

January 2025

Department of Health Psychology, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Groningen, University Medical Center Groningen, Antonius Deusinglaan 1, 9713 AV, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Purpose: This study aimed to identify trajectories of BMI, obesity-specific health-related quality of life (HR-QoL), and depression trajectories from pre-surgery to 24 months post-bariatric metabolic surgery (BMS), and explore their associations, addressing subgroup differences often hidden in group-level analyses.

Method: Patients with severe obesity (n = 529) reported their HR-QoL and depression before undergoing BMS, and at 12 and 24 months post-operation. Latent Class Growth Analysis was used to identify trajectories of BMI, HR-QoL and depression.

Aflatoxin is a mycotoxin produced by fungi of the genus Aspergillus that is present in various foods. Probiotics are well-established products in aquaculture, and due to their effective contribution to the intestine, they can be used as an aflatoxin adsorbent. This study evaluated the effects of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) on enzymatic activity and intestinal function in Piaractus mesopotamicus (pacu) fingerlings fed diets containing a probiotic-based adsorbent (PBA).

Systematic Study of Hard-Wall Confinement-Induced Effects on Atomic Electronic Structure.

J Phys Chem A

January 2025

Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, University of Helsinki, P.O. Box 55, A.I. Virtanens Plats 1, University of Helsinki FI-00014, Finland.

We point out that although a litany of studies have been published on atoms in hard-wall confinement, they have either not been systematic, having only looked at select atoms and/or select electron configurations, or they have not used robust numerical methods. To remedy the situation, we perform in this work a methodical study of atoms in hard-wall confinement with the HelFEM program, which employs the finite element method that trivially implements the hard-wall potential, guarantees variational results, and allows for easily finding the numerically exact solution. Our fully numerical calculations are based on nonrelativistic density functional theory and spherically averaged densities.

Insulin plays a key role in metabolic homeostasis. insulin-producing cells (IPCs) are functional analogues of mammalian pancreatic beta cells and release insulin directly into circulation. To investigate the in vivo dynamics of IPC activity, we quantified the effects of nutritional and internal state changes on IPCs using electrophysiological recordings.
