Myxol, a monocyclic carotenoid with β- and ψ-end groups, has been identified in only a limited number of bacteria, such as flavobacteria and cyanobacteria. Despite its biological significance, the biosynthetic pathway of myxol is not well understood, and studies on its physiological functions and biological activities are limited because of its rarity. BLAST homology searches for carotenoid biosynthesis genes in the genome of were performed.

For photosynthesis, oxygenic phototrophic organisms necessarily contain not only chlorophylls but also carotenoids. Various carotenoids have been identified in algae and taxonomic studies of algae have been conducted. In this review, the relationship between the distribution of chlorophylls and carotenoids and the phylogeny of sea and freshwater oxygenic phototrophs, including cyanobacteria, red algae, brown algae, and green algae, is summarized.

Certain secondary carotenoids, such as astaxanthin and canthaxanthin, are of growing economic interest in the fields of human nutrition, food, health and cosmetics, as well as feed and aquaculture, particularly due to their numerous biological activities, such as their remarkable antioxidant properties. The present study was devoted to assessing, in a photobioreactor, the feasibility of cultivating newly isolated strains from the biodiversity of Reunion Island for the production of these valuable xanthophylls. The results showed that all these strains were capable of producing and accumulating canthaxanthin and astaxanthin in response to environmental stresses.

The yeast Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous synthesizes astaxanthin, a high-value carotenoid with biotechnological relevance in the nutraceutical and aquaculture industries. However, enhancing carotenoid production through strain engineering remains an ongoing challenge. Recent studies have demonstrated that carotenogenesis in X.
