3D cell cultures better replicate the in vivo environment compared to 2D models. Glioblastoma multiforme, a malignant brain tumor, highly profits from its cellular environment. Here, the U87 glioblastoma cell line in the presence/absence of primary astrocytes is studied.

The usage of beta blockers in breast cancer (BC) patients is implicated in the reduction in distant metastases, cancer recurrence, and cancer mortality. Studies suggest that the adrenergic pathway is directly involved in sympathetic-driven hematopoietic activation of pro-tumor microenvironmental proliferation and tumor cell trafficking into the circulation. Cancer-associated macrophage-like cells (CAMLs) are pro-tumor polynucleated monocytic cells of hematopoietic origin emanating from tumors which may aid in circulating tumor cell (CTC) dissemination into the circulation.

Linking unfolded protein response to ovarian cancer cell fusion.

BMC Cancer

June 2022

Center for Translational Research in Onco-Hematology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva, Rue Michel Servet 1, CH-1206, Geneva, Switzerland.

Background: Polyploid giant cancer cells (PGCCs) have been observed in epithelial ovarian tumors. They can resist antimitotic drugs, thus participating in tumor maintenance and recurrence. Although their origin remains unclear, PGCC formation seems to be enhanced by conditions that trigger the unfolded protein response (UPR) such as hypoxia or chemotherapeutic drugs like paclitaxel.

3D hydrogel-based microcapsules as an in vitro model to study tumorigenicity, cell migration and drug resistance.

Acta Biomater

April 2022

Institute of Biomaterials, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg, Cauerstraße 6, Erlangen 91058, Germany; Institute for Molecular Systems Engineering, University of Heidelberg. INF 253, Heidelberg 69120, Germany. Electronic address:

In this work, we analyzed the reliability of alginate-gelatin microcapsules as artificial tumor model. These tumor-like scaffolds are characterized by their composition and stiffness (∼25 kPa), and their capability to restrict -but not hinder- cell migration, proliferation and release from confinement. Hydrogel-based microcapsules were initially utilized to detect differences in mechano-sensitivity between MCF7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells, and the endothelial cell line EA.

Background: In space, the reduction or loss of the gravity vector greatly affects the interaction between cells. Since the beginning of the space age, microgravity has been identified as an informative tool in biomedicine, including cancer research. The A549 cell line is a hypotriploid human alveolar basal epithelial cell line widely used as a model for lung adenocarcinoma.
