Combined exposure of sleep deprivation and environmental particulate matter drives aging in multiple systems.

J Hazard Mater

March 2025

Department of Environmental Health, School of Public Health and the Key Laboratory of Public Health Safety, Fudan University, Shanghai, China; IRDR International Center of Excellence on Risk Interconnectivity and Governance on Weather/Climate Extremes Impact and Public Health, Fudan University, Shanghai 200433, China. Electronic address:

Sleep disturbance accelerates aging, with accompanying exposure to air pollution. However, most studies ignore the combined exposure. This study aimed to investigate the combined effects of sleep deprivation and PM exposure on multi-system aging and to explore the damage mechanisms.

Background: The final event in modern pentathlon, the laser run, determines the final ranking, and it is not known whether the athletes' heart rates (HRs) and success rates during the shooting in the laser run are affected by environmental conditions. Although heart rate (HR) affects shooting performance, exercise-induced muscle fatigue accompanying increased HR can affect shooting speed and accuracy. The aims of this research were (a) to compare the HRs of pentathletes before and after fatigue, (b) to compare the shooting performance of pentathletes in the field vs.

Cold-induced fibrosis and metabolic remodeling in the turtle (Trachemys scripta) ventricle.

Acta Physiol (Oxf)

April 2025

Division of Cardiovascular Sciences, Faculty of Biology, Medicine, and Health, University of Manchester, Manchester, UK.

Aim: Cardiac fibrosis contributes to systolic and diastolic dysfunction and can disrupt electrical pathways in the heart. There are currently no therapies that prevent or reverse fibrosis in human cardiac disease. However, animals like freshwater turtles undergo seasonal remodeling of their hearts, demonstrating the plasticity of fibrotic remodeling.

Heat waves are associated with increased fatalities from adverse cardiovascular events attributed to the negative effects of heat on cardiac function. However, scientific understanding of acute cardiac adjustments to heat has come primarily from laboratory experiments employing insulated and encapsulated heating modalities, most commonly water-perfused suits. We evaluated whether findings from those studies reflect cardiac responses during more natural exposures to hot ambient conditions simulated in climate-controlled chambers by synthesizing the findings from over 400 laboratory-based heat exposure studies (6858 participant-exposures) published between 1961-2024.

Electronic address:

Introduction: This systematic review examines how extreme temperatures impact Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) morbidity and mortality, focusing on identifying vulnerable subpopulations.

Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search from January 1, 2000, to November 6, 2024, across databases like PubMed, MEDLINE and EMBASE, Web of Science, and Scopus, focusing on observational studies that quantitatively defined extreme temperatures and their impacts on COPD morbidity and mortality. Out of 3140 records, 25 studies met the inclusion criteria.
