This study concerns the effect of spontaneous acquisition of alcohol drinking in rhesus monkeys on plasma levels of beta-endorphin, ACTH, prolactin, cortisol and testosterone. Twelve monkeys had free-choice access to water and two ethanol/water solutions (1%, 2%, v/v) for 4 weeks. During the first 2 weeks, six monkeys were injected (i.m.) twice daily with 0.50 microgram/kg desglycinamide-(Arg8)-vasopressin (DGAVP), a neuropeptide, that has been postulated to interfere with central positive reinforcement processes. The other six were treated with a placebo. Hormonal plasma levels after the first 2 weeks and after another 2 weeks of alcohol drinking were compared to pre-alcohol hormonal levels (baseline). The placebo-treated subjects significantly increased, but the DGAVP-treated subjects significantly decreased ethanol intake over time. After 2 weeks of alcohol, significant increases were found in beta-endorphin and ACTH levels. After 4 weeks, prolactin was increased, cortisol decreased and particularly beta-endorphin remained significantly increased. No relationship was found between baseline hormonal levels and subsequent ethanol intake. No significant differences in plasma hormonal changes were observed between DGAVP- and placebo-treated subjects. Two placebo-treated subjects that showed the highest increase in ethanol intake over time, reacted differently, by reducing beta-endorphin and ACTH levels over time, showing the largest decreases in cortisol and hardly any prolactin reaction. It is concluded that spontaneous alcohol drinking by naïve subjects disturbs hormonal processes and that two animals deviated with respect to the acquisition in alcohol drinking and endocrine functioning.

Background And Aims: Military veterans demonstrate high rates of heavy drinking and insomnia, but few if any studies have tested real-world, daily associations between sleep and alcohol use within this population. Moreover, although daily diary and experimental studies among civilians have found negative associations between alcohol use and sleep, these patterns change with consecutive days of drinking and may differ for those with insomnia. This study measured (a) acute and cumulative day-level associations between sleep and alcohol use among heavy-drinking US veterans and (b) the extent to which insomnia moderates these associations.

Functionalized polymer membrane electrodes based multichannel sensor is used as an electronic tongue to monitor the drinking water (DW) quality simply by measuring the surface electric potential with respect to Ag/AgCl reference electrode in 1 mM aqueous KCl. Changes of minute concentration of dissolved minerals greatly affected the surface potential of the sensor. The three-channel sensor device (electronic tongue) is made by using three different functionalized polymer membrane electrodes, namely, phosphorylated hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride modified polyvinyl alcohol-polyacrylic acid membrane; phosphorylated and crosslinked polyvinyl--ethylene membrane; phosphorylated and crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol membrane, as working electrodes and a Ag/AgCl reference electrode.

Background: The current subclassification of steatotic liver disease (SLD) relies on validated questionnaires, such as Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and Lifetime Drinking History (LDH), which, while useful, are impractical and lack precision for their use in routine clinical practice. Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) is a quantitative, objective alcohol biomarker with high sensitivity and specificity.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global health challenge associated with lifestyle factors such as diet, alcohol, BMI, smoking, sleep, and physical activity. Metabolomics, especially nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR), offers insights into metabolic profiles' role in diseases, but more research is needed on its connection to CKD and lifestyle factors. Therefore, we utilized the latest metabolomics data from the UK Biobank to explore the relationship between plasma metabolites and lifestyle factors, as well as to investigate the associations between various factors, including lifestyle-related metabolites, and the latent phase of CKD onset.
