[Infantile and juvenile obesity: a medicosocial problem].

Pediatrie (Bucur)

Secţia Pediatrie, Spitalul Judeţean Bistriţa.

Published: November 1992

The authors studied a series of 536 schoolchildren aged from 11 to 16 years. Anthropometric measurements defined 60 cases as having a ponderal excess of 10% to 50% in comparison to height. This ponderal excess was 10% to 20% by 11 children, 20% to 30% in 26 cases, 30% to 50% by 16 children and more than 50% by another 7 children. All the cases were due to an excess of ingested calories. 50% of children had one or both parents with excess of weight. The exogenous form of childhood obesity seems to be an important medical and social problem in our country and impose the reinforcement of prophylaxis by dietary measures.

Phenotypic Classification of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children Using Latent Class Analysis.

JAMA Netw Open

January 2025

Coronavirus and Other Respiratory Viruses Division, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Georgia.

Importance: Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is an uncommon but severe hyperinflammatory illness that occurs 2 to 6 weeks after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Presentation overlaps with other conditions, and risk factors for severity differ by patient. Characterizing patterns of MIS-C presentation can guide efforts to reduce misclassification, categorize phenotypes, and identify patients at risk for severe outcomes.

Background: Changes in cardiac function and structure as well as their association with the cardiac autonomic nervous system remain incompletely characterized in children with stage 5 chronic kidney disease (CKD) receiving hemodialysis (HD).

Methods: A prospective observational cohort study was conducted on 40 Egyptian children with CKD on regular HD compared to 40 age- and sex-matched healthy children. All participants underwent thorough clinical examination, laboratory investigations, 24-h Holter monitoring, and 2D/4D echocardiographic study (conventional and advanced modalities).

Fasting glucose levels at diagnosis and delivery are associated with postpartum glucose abnormalities in GDM women.

Arch Gynecol Obstet

January 2025

Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, The University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand.

Women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) significantly increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. Although the increased glucose levels typically return to normal range after delivery for most GDM women, a significant proportion of GDM women develop impaired glucose tolerance or overt diabetes after delivery. Several factors associated with postpartum glucose abnormalities have been identified, yet the link between fasting glucose levels at diagnosis of GDM and postpartum glucose abnormalities remains unclear.

Inflammatory cytokines are fundamental mediators of the organismal response to injury, infection, or other harmful stimuli. To elucidate the early and mostly direct transcriptional signatures of inflammatory cytokines, we profiled all immunologic cell types by RNAseq after systemic exposure to IL1β, IL6, and TNFα. Our results revealed a significant overlap in the responses, with broad divergence between myeloid and lymphoid cells, but with very few cell-type-specific responses.
