Central projections of nociceptive input originating from the low back and limb muscle in rats.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Physical Therapy, Faculty of Rehabilitation, Niigata University of Health and Welfare, 1398 Shimami-cho, Kita-ku, Niigata, 950-3198, Japan.

Since clinical features of chronic muscle pain originating from the low back and limbs are different (higher prevalence and broader/duller sensation of low back muscle pain than limb muscle pain), spinal and/or supraspinal projection of nociceptive information could differ between the two muscles. We tested this hypothesis using c-Fos immunohistochemistry combined with retrograde-labeling of dorsal horn (DH) neurons projecting to ventrolateral periaqueductal grey (vlPAG) or ventral posterolateral nucleus of the thalamus (VPL) by fluorogold (FG) injections into the vlPAG or VPL. C-Fos expression in the DH was induced by injecting 5% formalin into the multifidus (MF, low back) or gastrocnemius-soleus (GS, limb) muscle.

Rationale: The occurrence of delayed Horner's syndrome caused by a dog bite to the neck is rarely reported. Acute stress disorder (ASD) can easily be neglected when diagnosing this disease in trauma patients who cannot be effectively observed. The symptoms of Horner's syndrome may not be readily detected in patients with ASD.

Article Synopsis
  • Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (PXA) is a rare brain tumor first reported in 1979, mostly found in the temporoparietal lobe, and it usually has a good outcome.
  • The most common symptoms are seizures, but about 50-78% of patients may also have psychiatric issues like anxiety, depression, or even schizophrenia-like symptoms.
  • A recent case involved a 26-year-old man who had seizures and schizophrenia-like psychosis for 5 years; after surgery, his condition improved, showing how important surgery can be for this type of tumor.

Background: The impact of depth of elaboration in individual psychotherapy sessions on overall treatment effectiveness was found in the empirical literature. In the best sessions, relevant content is processed with greater depth; in contrast, in the shallower sessions, the emerging content is more superficial. Evidence suggests that achieving a high level of depth is closely related to specific therapist characteristics and relational dimensions (including clinicians' emotional responses to patients).

Assessing the Feasibility of EMG Biofeedback to Reduce the Upper Trapezius Muscle Excitation during a Seated Row Exercise, a Non-randomized Comparative Study.

Appl Psychophysiol Biofeedback

December 2024

Laboratório de Biomecânica, Programa de Engenharia Biomédica (COPPE), Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil.

The upper trapezius muscle is often excessively excited during resistance training exercises, increasing the shoulder's liability to musculoskeletal disorders of individuals participating in overhead sports or throwing activities. Different approaches have been proposed for reducing the potentially harmful loading of the upper trapezius. None, however, has been devised to deal directly with the main culprit: the muscle excitation.
