The history of modern hospitals in Stettin is about 280 years long. The history of urology in Stettin (Szczecin), like in Europe, is closely associated with the construction of the useful cystoscope, discovery of X-rays, and progress in radiology and endoscopy. In Stettin, like in many other cities, patients with urological diseases were treated at departments of surgery or departments of internal medicine.

Objective: To evaluate the diagnosis and treatment of aldosterone-producing adrenal cortical neoplasms.
Methods: From 1978 to February 2001, 149 patients with aldosterone-producing adrenal cortical neoplasms were diagnosed and treated. Of these patients, 148 had adrenal adenoma and 1 had adrenal cortical carcinoma.

Twenty-eight patients with primary aldosteronism were treated from 1974 to 1990. The serum potassium concentration was higher than normal level in all patients with the exception of one whose serum potassium concentration was normal. All of 14 tested patients had low renin values.

It is found that differentiation between pheochromocytoma and adrenomedullary hyperplasia with symptoms or signs alone is difficult, since both may have the same symptoms such as paroxysmal or sustained hypertension elevation and shock. Moreover, the laboratory findings of the former were also similar to those of the latter.
