Attenuating hyperammonemia preserves protein synthesis and muscle mass via restoration of perturbed metabolic pathways in bile duct-ligated rats.

Hepato-Neuro Laboratory, Centre Hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CRCHUM), Université de Montréal, 900, Rue Saint-Denis - Pavillon R, R08.422, Montréal (Québec), H2X 0A9, Canada.

Sarcopenia and hepatic encephalopathy (HE) are complications of chronic liver disease (CLD), which negatively impact clinical outcomes. Hyperammonemia is considered to be the central component in the pathogenesis of HE, however ammonia's toxic effects have also been shown to impinge on extracerebral organs including the muscle. Our aim was to investigate the effect of attenuating hyperammonemia with ornithine phenylacetate (OP) on muscle mass loss and associated molecular mechanisms in rats with CLD.

Multisystemic Sarcoidosis in the Primary Care Setting: A Case Report.

Cureus

December 2024

Family Medicine, Unidade de Saúde Familiar (USF) Amato Lusitano, Unidade Local de Saúde (ULS) de Amadora/Sintra, Amadora, PRT.

Sarcoidosis is a rare, multisystemic disease of unknown etiology, characterized by noncaseating granulomas in various organs. The disease often presents with nonspecific symptoms that complicate the diagnosis. We describe the case of a 31-year-old woman who presented to her family doctor with weight loss, cervical lymphadenopathy, parotid edema, and cutaneous lesions, initially raising suspicion of a lymphoproliferative disorder.

Background: To evaluate the biosafety, reduction in anterior capsule opacification, and fluctuation in intraocular pressure (IOP) of a new phakic refractive lens (PRL) with a sinusoidal drainage groove design.

Methods: This self-controlled experiment was performed on eight eyes of four rabbits. Each rabbit was implanted with a sinusoidal PRL (PRL-S5) in the right eye and a conventional posterior chamber PRL (PC-PRL) in the left eye.

December 2024

Department of Surgery, Section of Hepatobiliary Surgery and Liver Transplantation, University of Groningen, University Medical Center Groningen, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Background: Normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) is increasingly used to preserve and assess donor livers prior to transplantation. Due to its success, it is expected that more centers will start using this technology. However, NMP may also cause adverse effects.

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a clinical syndrome that can result from acute and chronic liver disorders, such as hepatitis, liver failure caused by alcohol or drugs, autoimmune diseases, metabolic diseases, cirrhosis, different types of tumors, and infections. This study aimed to investigate the effects of different doses of Beta-myrcene (β-myrcene) on the improvement of HE caused by thioacetamide (TAC) in male rats. To induce liver failure and acute damage in the studied animals, TAC was administered to rats at a dose of 100 mg/kg of body weight through an intraperitoneal (IP) injection with 24-hour intervals for seven consecutive days.
