Efficiency was studied of treatment of acute pneumonia (AP) in 148 patients with a focal croupous form. In the grave course of AP, antibacterial therapy with benzilpenicillin combined with sulphanilamide agents biseptol and nitrofuran was tried, the correcting therapy having been instituted on obtaining findings from assays of the sputum for sensitivity of the microflora to antibiotics. In those cases with Friendländer's bacilli recoverable, methicillin, oxacillin, macrolids, cephalosporins and some other agents were antibiotics of choice.

A total of 168 patients were examined presenting with different clinical and roentgenological forms of acute pneumonia, such as focal one with an acute course, focal protracted, croupous with an acute course, croupous protracted, abscessing ones. Blood serum elastinase-like activity was studied. The complicated forms of pneumonia were found to be accompanied by two-phase dynamics of elastinase-like activity, such that it soars by day 10-15 of the disease process and declines by day 20-15, unlike the prognostically favourable forms of the condition where the initial reduction of this parameter turns to its gradual normalization.

Mucociliary transport (MCT) was investigated in 45 and 20 patients with acute focal and croupous pneumonia, respectively. MCT condition was assessed by its duration, adherence and surface tension of the sputum, water fractions. Early disease was characterized by mucociliary insufficiency as shown by longer M T duration, increased surface tension and adherence.

Surface activity of expirates, expired vapours was studied in 143 male patients, aged 18 to 20 years with acute pneumonia (AP). A colorimetric procedure based on estimation of the intensity of sudan solubilization by lipids contained in expirate condensates was used. The control group included 30 patients with acute bronchitis and 50 healthy persons of the same age and sex.
