Combining a traditional weather station with radiation monitors draws the public's attention to the magnitude of background radiation and its typical variation while providing early indications of unplanned radiological releases, such as nuclear power plant accidents or terrorist acts. Several networks of combined weather and radiation monitoring sensors exist, but these fail to be affordable for broad distribution. This work involves creating an affordable system to accumulate data from multiple locations into a single open-source database.

Ribonucleic acid (RNA) extraction is the first critical step in gene expression analysis. In this chapter, we describe a high-throughput RNA extraction method using guanidine thiocyanate and isopropyl alcohol (HighGI). The use of carboxyl-coated paramagnetic beads, instead of silica membrane columns, enables semi-automation using a liquid handling system and high-throughput RNA extraction for large-scale transcriptome studies.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the performance, for the administration of fluticasone propionate with a pressurized metered-dose inhaler (pMDI), of two low-tech paperboard spacers versus two commercially available valved holding chambers (VHC).

Methods: According to the Canadian standard CAN/CSA-Z264.1-02, total emitted dose (TED) and aerodynamic size distribution were measured for the pMDI in combination with 4 different spacers: a homemade paper cup spacer, the DispozABLE® paperboard spacer, the AeroChamber Plus® plastic VHC, and the Vortex® aluminium VHC.
