The midbrain dorsomedial periaqueductal grey column (dmPAG) is involved in the regulation of cardiovascular responses. Due to the presence of Gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors in the dmPAG, this study aimed to investigate the role of GABA receptors in the dmPAG on cardiovascular parameters and its possible peripheral mechanisms. The left femoral artery was cannulated, and systolic arterial pressure (SAP), mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) were recorded using a Power lab system.

Forgotten Circulation: Reduced Mesenteric Venous Capacitance in Hypertensive Rats Is Improved by Decreasing Sympathetic Activity.

Hypertension

April 2024

Manaaki Manawa - The Centre for Heart Research, Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, University of Auckland, New Zealand (T.W.E., A.B.-T., C.J.B., J.F.R.P., F.D.M.).

Background: The mesenteric venous reservoir plays a vital role in mediating blood volume and pressure changes and is richly innervated by sympathetic nerves; however, the precise nature of venous sympathetic regulation and its role during hypertension remains unclear. We hypothesized that sympathetic drive to mesenteric veins in spontaneously hypertensive (SH) rats is raised, increasing mean circulatory filling pressure (MCFP), and impairing mesenteric capacitance.

Methods: Arterial pressure, central venous pressure, mesenteric arterial, and venous blood flow were measured simultaneously in conscious male Wistar and SH rats.

Phylogenetic and Recombination Analysis of Clinical Vitreous Humor-Derived Adenovirus Isolates Reveals Discordance Between Serotype and Phylogeny.

Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci

February 2024

Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, School of Medicine and Public Health, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, Wisconsin, United States.

Purpose: To sequence, identify, and perform phylogenetic and recombination analysis on three clinical adenovirus samples taken from the vitreous humor at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.

Methods: The PacBio Sequel II was used to sequence the genomes of the three clinical adenovirus isolates. To identify the isolates, a full genome-based multiple sequence alignment (MSA) of 722 mastadenoviruses was generated using multiple alignment using fast Fourier transform (MAFFT).

To investigate noxious stimulation-responsive neural circuits that could influence the gut, we recorded from intestinally directed (efferent) nerve filaments dissected from mesenteric nerves close to the small intestine in anesthetized rats. These exhibited baseline multiunit activity that was almost unaffected by vagotomy (VagX) and reduced only slightly by cutting the splanchnic nerves. The activity was halved by hexamethonium (Hex) treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • - Fowl adenoviruses (FAdVs) are found worldwide in poultry and are linked to various health issues, with a new strain identified in black-necked cranes, classified as serotype 4 (BNC2021).
  • - The genomic analysis of BNC2021 revealed specific gene deletions and mutations associated with increased viral pathogenicity.
  • - A study demonstrated that this strain can infect mallard ducks, causing hepatitis-hydropericardium syndrome and widespread viral replication in multiple organs, emphasizing the need for monitoring FAdVs in wild bird populations.
