Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the feasibility and outcomes of I-LEVUR, a surgical technique for treating upper moiety ectopic ureter in patients with a duplex renal system, which avoids reimplanting the lower ureter.
  • Twelve patients, mostly young children, underwent the procedure with a mean surgical time of 127.5 minutes, and no major complications were reported post-surgery.
  • Results indicated improved urinary continence in all patients after an average follow-up of about 78.5 months, suggesting that I-LEVUR is a safe and effective option that preserves normal ureter function.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a combined surgical technique for treating primary asymmetrical vesicoureteral reflux in children, comparing it to the standard method of bilateral cross-trigonal reimplantation.
  • The research focused on surgical complications, post-operative urinary tract infections (fUTIs), and the need for further interventions over an 18-year period, involving 80 children who had experienced febrile UTIs.
  • Results showed comparable success rates between the two surgical groups, but the combined technique had a significantly shorter hospital stay and reduced need for bladder catheters and ureteral stents.

Aim: The aim of this study was to compare the differences between angles of bladder neck in girls with overactive bladder and those in healthy ones using transabdominal ultrasonography.

Materials And Methods: This study consists of 28 girls complicated with overactive bladder (Group I) and 40 healthy girls (Group II). The anteroposterior vesical wall angle (APVA), urethroposterior vesical wall angle (UPVA), urethroanterior vesical wall angle (UAVA), thickness of bladder mucosa, distance of urethral orifices, and distance between ureter and urethra orifice were measured in supine position using transabdominal ultrasonography.

We have demonstrated in canines that somatic nerve transfer to vesical branches of the inferior hypogastric plexus (IHP) can be used for bladder reinnervation after spinal root injury. Yet, the complex anatomy of the IHP hinders the clinical application of this repair strategy. Here, using human cadavers, we clarify the spatial relationships of the vesical branches of the IHP and nearby pelvic ganglia, with the ureteral orifice of the bladder.

Vesical fungal bezoars on post-TURBT scar tissue causing obstruction and mimicking urothelial carcinoma.

BMJ Case Rep

Department of Urology, Faculty of Medicine, School of Health Sciences, University of Thessaly, Panepistemiako Geniko Nosokomeio Larisas, Larissa, Thessaly, Greece.

Fungal bezoars (fungal balls) are rarely reported in the upper or lower urinary tract. They can be the cause of severe morbidities such as urinary tract obstruction, renal failure and fungaemia. Hereby, we present a rare case of a male patient who underwent transurethral resection of bladder tumour (TURBT), and during his postoperative period, he was diagnosed with bladder fungal bezoars adherent to his resection area.
