Robotic Resection of an Ectopic Parathyroid Gland: A Systematic Review.

Cureus

December 2024

General Surgery, East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, Brighton and Hove, GBR.

Ectopic parathyroid glands result from abnormal migration during development. If not detected promptly, they can lead to persistent or recurrent primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT). Inferior parathyroid glands are typically located in the anterior mediastinum, while superior parathyroid glands are often near the tracheoesophageal groove, both of which contribute to pHPT.

In Parkinson's disease, dopaminergic neurons (DANs) in the midbrain gradually degenerate, with ventral substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) DANs exhibiting greater vulnerability. However, it remains unclear whether specific molecular subtypes of ventral SNc DANs are more susceptible to degeneration in PD, and if they contribute to the early motor symptoms associated with the disease. We identified a subtype of Sox6+ DANs, Anxa1+, which are selectively lost earlier than other DANs, and with a time course that aligns with the development of motor symptoms in MitoPark mice.

The striatum is divided into two interdigitated tissue compartments, the striosome and matrix. These compartments exhibit distinct anatomical, neurochemical, and pharmacological characteristics and have separable roles in motor and mood functions. Little is known about the functions of these compartments in humans.

Background: Devices that help educate young doctors and enable safe, minimally invasive surgery are needed. Eureka is a surgical artificial intelligence (AI) system that can intraoperatively highlight loose connective tissues (LCTs) in the dissected layers and nerves in the surgical field displayed on a monitor. In this study, we examined whether AI navigation (AIN) with Eureka can assist trainees in recognizing nerves during colorectal surgery.

While MRI has become the imaging modality of choice for intracranial meningiomas, no radiologic reporting guidance exists to date that relies on a systematic collection of information relevant to the core medical disciplines involved in the management of these patients. To address this issue, a nationwide expert survey was conducted in Germany. A literature-based catalog of potential reporting elements for MRI examinations of meningioma patients was developed interdisciplinarily.
