In this supplement are given the characters of 52 new Salmonella serovars recognized in 1983 by the WHO collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Salmonella. With regard to new taxonomic knowledge, the traditional classification of 4 Salmonella subgenera was replaced by the concept of 5 subspecies, designated I, II, IIa (monophasic Arizona), IIIb (diphasic Arizona), IV and V. Furthermore, names of serovars belonging to subspecies I are no longer printed in italics, indicating their infrasubspecific rank.

After an extensive work-up (negative bronchoscopy and mediastinoscopy showing a granulomatous reaction) she underwent thoracotomy; the nodule was enucleated and showed caseous material within a fibrous capsule. Cultures in mycology produced a heavy growth of Coccidioides immitis, a diphasic pathogenic fungus endemic in South Western USA, identified by its morphology in autoclaved cultures, reversion to the spherule phase in mice and a 1:80 immunofluorescent stain with both commercial and patient's serum.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFA collection of 88 Salmonella reference strains including the so-called subgenus I (20 strains), subgenus II (21 strains), subgenus III (= Arizona, 21 strains), subgenus IV (20 strains) and 6 atypical strains (bongor group) was submitted to 90 carbon source utilization tests and 41 biochemical tests. A cluster analysis (Jaccard coefficient, clustering according to the variance) yielded 7 phenons; 35 strains from these 7 phenons were studied by DNA relatedness (S1 nuclease method with DE81 filters). Six hybridization groups, largely concordant with the phenon, were distinguished.

To extend the flagella specific H antigenic schema of P. aeruginosa (ANSORG, 1978), investigations are carried out to reveal phase variation in this species as in Salmonella or Arizona. With conventional methods, i.
