Cardiovascular health requires the orchestration of the daily rhythm of blood pressure (BP), which responds to changes in light exposure and dietary patterns. Whether rhythmic light and feeding can modulate daily BP rhythm directly or via modulating intrinsic core clock gene is unknown. Using inducible global knockout mice (iBmal1KO), we explored the impact of rhythmic light, rhythmic feeding, or their combination on various physiological parameters.

Brain and muscle ARNT-Like 1 (BMAL1) is a circadian clock transcription factor that regulates physiological functions. Male adrenal-specific () KO mice displayed blunted serum corticosterone rhythms, altered blood pressure rhythm, and altered timing of eating, but there is a lack of knowledge in females. This study investigates the role of adrenal BMAL1 in renal electrolyte handling and urinary aldosterone levels in response to low salt in male and female mice.

Freshwater fish that are acutely exposed to copper (Cu) can experience disturbances of ion regulation and ammonia excretion. Temperature has been shown to affect Cu bioaccumulation and toxicity in fish, but the focus has largely been on warm temperature effects. Yet, acclimation of freshwater fish to near-freezing temperatures encountered during the winter of temperate regions can challenge fish condition and physiology, including ion regulation.
