The thymus is the central organ involved with T-cell development and the production of naïve T cells. During normal aging, the thymus undergoes marked involution, reducing naïve T-cell output and resulting in a predominance of long-lived memory T cells in the periphery. Outside of aging, systemic stress responses that induce corticosteroids (CS), or other insults such as radiation exposure, induce thymocyte apoptosis, resulting in a transient acute thymic involution with subsequent recovery occurring after cessation of the stimulus.

The study is devoted to the effect of lowered resuscitation temperature (26 °C) on cryopreserved porcine adrenal glands functional activity in vitro and in vivo under xenotransplantation. The adrenals were collected from newborn pigs, cryopreserved with 5 % DMSO at a rate of 1 °C/min, resuscitated at 26 or 37 °C for 48 h (5 % CO, DMEM), embedded into small intestinal submucosa, and transplanted to bilaterally adrenalectomized rats. It has been shown that the glands resuscitated at 26 °C have suppressed free-radical processes and can produce cortisol and aldosterone in vitro, and may lead to elevated blood levels of these hormones.

Background: Inhaled irritant air pollutants may trigger stress-related metabolic dysfunction associated with altered circulating adrenal-derived hormones.
Objectives: We used implantable telemetry in rats to assess real-time changes in circulating glucose during and after exposure to ozone and mechanistically linked responses to neuroendocrine stress hormones.
Methods: First, using a cross-over design, we monitored glucose during ozone exposures (0.

Ozone-induced lung injury, inflammation, and pulmonary/hypothalamus gene expression changes are diminished in adrenalectomized (AD) rats. Acute ozone exposure induces metabolic alterations concomitant with increases in epinephrine and corticosterone. We hypothesized that adrenal hormones are responsible for observed hepatic ozone effects, and in AD rats, these changes would be diminished.

Remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) is one of the most effective approaches to attenuate tissue injury caused by severe ischemia-reperfusion (I/R). Experimental studies have demonstrated that RIPC is capable of producing a protective effect not only on heart, but also on brain, lungs, kidneys, liver, intestine, and stomach. We previously demonstrated that glucocorticoids participate in protective effect of local gastric ischemic preconditioning against I/R-induced gastric injury.
