Background: High-flow nasal oxygenation is an oxygen delivery method by which high concentrations of heated humidified oxygen are supplied via the nasal cavity. This study aimed to investigate the effect of high-flow nasal oxygenation on gastric volume change in adult patients undergoing laryngeal microsurgery under tubeless general anesthesia with neuromuscular blockade.
Methods: Patients aged 19-80 years with an American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status 1 or 2 who were scheduled to undergo laryngoscopic surgery under general anesthesia were recruited.
Recent advances in minimally invasive techniques have made thoracoscopic and laparoscopic esophagectomy a real alternative to open 3-field esophagectomy, with better results in terms of reduction of morbidity and mortality. In this video tutorial we demonstrate our technique of minimally invasive esophagectomy with cervical anastomosis, which is summarized briefly as follows: The patient is placed in a left lateral decubitus position. Four ports are used for thoracoscopic mobilization of the thoracic esophagus and for mediastinal lymph node dissection.

Aim: To determine whether routine nasogastric (NG) decompression benefitted patients undergoing radical gastric surgery.
Methods: Between January 1998 and December 2008, 519 patients who underwent distal gastrectomy for gastric cancer were retrospectively divided into 2 time-period cohorts; those treated with Billroth II (BII) reconstruction in the first 6 years and those with Roux-en-Y (RY) reconstruction in the last 5 years. In the latter group, the patients were further divided into 2 subgroups; with and without nasogastric decompression.

Tube-based ambulatory pH testing has rapidly evolved in the past 3 decades to become the standard by which other diagnostic approaches to gastroesophageal reflux disease are judged. Acid exposure 5 cm above the manometrically determined lower esophageal sphincter is the standard for documentation of pathologic acid exposure of the distal esophagus. Proximal esophageal or hypopharyngeal monitoring is an evolving technique that may shed light on patients with supraesophageal symptoms.
