Published: March 1992

The authors describe the neurological manifestations of a female patient with hypercholesterolemia who developed myopathy in the course of her treatment with clofibrate. We present the case of an elderly man with a small-joint polyarthritis, accompanied by pitting oedema, involving hands and feet, raising clinical suspicion of remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting oedema (RS3PE). Treatment with corticosteroids was initiated with significant improvement, but unacceptable iatrogeny ensued, and tapering was not possible without disease flare-up. A trial of tocilizumab allowed disease activity control, slow weaning of corticosteroids and, ultimately, its suspension.

The health product circuit corresponds to the chain of steps that a medicine goes through in hospital, from prescription to administration. The safety and regulation of all the stages of this circuit are major issues to ensure the safety and protect the well-being of hospitalized patients. In this paper we present an automatic system for analyzing prescriptions using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), with the aim of ensuring patient safety by limiting the risk of prescription errors or drug iatrogeny.

Article Synopsis
  • Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic skin disease with limited treatments, and adalimumab, a TNF-α monoclonal antibody, is the first approved therapy for moderate to severe cases.
  • A 23-year-old woman on adalimumab for HS developed severe headaches, nausea, and fever two years later, which led to the discovery of isolated neurotuberculosis via MRI and a positive TB test.
  • This case emphasizes the need for regular monitoring and screening for tuberculosis in patients receiving immunosuppressive therapy to catch infections early and avoid serious complications.
