Even when pain control is implemented, calves may experience pain for days after hot-iron disbudding. Whether calves seek pain relief post-disbudding offers a novel approach to assessing pain in these animals. By employing an approach-aversion paradigm, we explored the ability of cold therapy to provide immediate pain relief in disbudded calves.

Background: Neck reflex points or Adler-Langer points are commonly used in neural therapy to detect so-called interference fields. Chronic irritations or inflammations in the sinuses, teeth, tonsils, or ears are supposed to induce tension and tenderness of the soft tissues and short muscles in the upper cervical spine. The individual treatment strategy is based on the results of diagnostic Adler-Langer point palpation.

Effects of local anesthetics on compound action potentials generated from the frog sciatic nerve.

Physician Assistant Studies Program, School of Health Professions, St. Bonaventure University, St. Bonaventure, New York.

The frog sciatic nerve provides a robust physiological preparation students may conveniently use to investigate the properties of compound action potentials. Electrical stimulation with standard physiology teaching equipment elicits compound action potentials that are easily recorded by upper-level undergraduate students. The amplitude of compound action potentials increases with greater stimulation voltages, up until a maximum response is achieved.
