Transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI) is a potentially lethal complication of blood transfusions, characterized by the rapid onset of pulmonary edema and hypoxemia within six hours post-transfusion. As one of the primary causes of transfusion-related mortality, TRALI carries a significant mortality rate of 6-12%. However, effective treatment strategies for TRALI are currently lacking, underscoring the urgent need for a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of its pathogenesis.

Red blood cell (RBC) transfusions carry risks, and the mechanisms mediating adverse transfusion outcomes are not fully understood. This review explores the impact of donor sex and donor-recipient sex mismatch on RBC characteristics and transfusion outcomes. Females, at least those in their reproductive age, have a higher proportion of young RBCs in the circulation when compared to males, associated with higher post transfusion recovery.

Background: Packed RBC (pRBC) transfusions are often necessary to enhance organ perfusion and tissue oxygenation in cases of severe anemia.
Objectives: We aimed to describe changes in acid-base and biochemical parameters in dogs after transfusion of pRBC and potential effects on the outcome.
Methods: The prospective observational study included anemic dogs requiring pRBC transfusions.

Red blood cell (RBC) storage solutions have evolved significantly over the past decades to optimize the preservation of cell viability and functionality during hypothermic storage. This comprehensive review provides an in-depth analysis of the effects of various storage solutions and conditions on critical RBC parameters during refrigerated preservation. A wide range of solutions, from basic formulations such as phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), to advanced additive solutions (ASs), like AS-7 and phosphate, adenine, glucose, guanosine, saline, and mannitol (PAGGSM), are systematically compared in terms of their ability to maintain key indicators of RBC integrity, including adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels, morphology, and hemolysis.

Background Aims: Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are attractive as a therapeutic modality in multiple disease conditions characterized by inflammation and vascular compromise. Logistically they are advantageous because they can be isolated from adult tissue sources, such as bone marrow (BM). The phase 2a START clinical trial determined BM-MSCs to be safe in patients with moderate-to-severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
