Focused ultrasound has advantages as an external stimulus for drug delivery as it is non-invasive, has high precision and can penetrate deep into tissues. Here, we report a gold-plated alginate (ALG) hydrogel system that retains highly water-soluble small-molecule fluorescein for sharp off/on release after ultrasound exposure. The ALG is crosslinked into beads with calcium chloride and layered with a polycation to adjust the surface charge for the adsorption of catalytic platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs).

Calcium phosphates, notably monetite, are valued biomaterials for bone applications owing to their osteogenic properties and rapid uptake by bone cells. This study investigates the enhancement of these properties through Cobalt doping, which is known to induce hypoxia and promote bone cell differentiation. Heat treatments at 700°C, 900°C, and 1050°C are applied to both monetite and Cobalt-doped monetite, facilitating the development of purer, more crystalline phases with varied particle sizes and optimized cellular responses.

The quality grade of cow meat is often lower than that of steer meat, resulting in economic losses and reduced consumer satisfaction. This review explores various strategies for improving the quality of cow meat, with a focus on slaughter and post-slaughter practices. Certain slaughter methods, including electrical stimulation and suspension techniques, have been shown to improve meat tenderness by alleviating rigor mortis and inducing an increase in sarcomere length.

The reactions at the mineral-solution interface govern whether heavy metals (HMs) ions are retained within minerals or migrate with the solution, thus influencing their cycling and fate. However, the mechanisms driving this differential behavior of HMs at the interface remain poorly understood. In this study, we present a novel paradigm for the selective retention of HMs ions at the mineral-solution interface.

The presence of the long-lived radionuclides Cs and Sr in ecosystems is a major environmental concern because bioavailable forms of the radionuclides are readily transferred to living organisms. The present study investigated how holometabolous insect development influences the fate of radiocaesium and radiostrontium by examining the behaviour of tracers (Cs and Sr) and stable elements during the larval feeding stage (21-23 days old), the pupal stage, and the adult stage. We aimed to evaluate the degree to which an herbivore or a detritivore food chain could serve as transfer pathways to higher trophic levels in terms of accumulation potential, and during which stage of development the accumulation potential is highest.
