Background: Hypothermia potentiates neuromuscular blockade in adults during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) but the pediatric literature is sparse. Temperature-dependent Hoffman degradation of cisatracurium may allow reduction in infusion rate (IR) during hypothermia. The effect of hypothermic CPB on the pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of cisatracurium has not been described in children.

Background: Cisatracurium in clinical practice is devoid of histamine-induced cardiovascular effects. On the other hand, 2 ED(95) doses of cisatracurium (100 µ g/kg) do not create satisfactory intubating conditions such as those seen with equipotent doses of atracurium. The recommended intubating dose of cisatracurium is 3 ED(95).

Mitochondrial myopathies make up a group of rare disorders whose onset is in childhood or adolescence. Muscle and central nervous system involvement is variable. Mitochondrial respiratory chain complex III deficiency (coenzyme Q - cytochrome C reductase) can manifest as exercise intolerance, myopathy, encephalopathy, and myocardial disease.

Skin erythemas formed in three patients during surgery at the sites where negative electrodes had been attached to stimulate the ulnar nerve for a neuromuscular transmission monitor (Relaxograph). The patients were all women, aged 52, 62, and 74 years, and general anesthesia lasted 8 h 20 min, 4 h 50 min, and 8 h 45 min, respectively. The electrodes used were disposable ECG electrodes in the first two patients and one designed for a neuromuscular monitor in the third; all were carbon-coated and then covered with gel.

Objective: The important task for anaesthetists is to provide an adequate degree of neuromuscular block during surgical operations, so that it should not be difficult to antagonize at the end of surgery. Therefore, this study examined the application of a simple technique (i.e.
