It is suggested that an orienting response to loud sound causes apnea, which, in already asphyxic infants, triggers a maximal secondary chemoreceptor response, with massive vagal stimulation of the heart, which causes heart arrest.

Pneumoscrotum is the term used to describe the presence of air within the scrotum and includes scrotal emphysema as well as pneumatocele. The etiology varies; in some cases, pneumoscrotum may be due to life-threatening disease like pneumothorax or Fournier gangrene. Despite this, pneumoscrotum is a rarely debated issue.

Agonal gasping provoked by asphyxia can save ~15% of mammals even from untreated ventricular fibrillation (VF), but it fails to revive infants with sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Our systematic study of airway reflexes in cats and other animals indicated that in addition to cough, there are two distinct airway reflexes that may contribute to auto-resuscitation. Gasp- and sniff-like spasmodic inspirations (SIs) can be elicited by nasopharyngeal stimulation, strongly activating the brainstem generator for inspiration, which is also involved in the control of gasping.

Background: In neonatal rodents, serotonin (5-HT) neurons are critical for successful autoresuscitation. We hypothesized that caffeine, a respiratory stimulant, would hasten the onset of gasping and improve autoresuscitation in 5-HT-deficient, Pet-1(-/-) mice.
Methods: Using a head-out system and electrocardiogram, we measured respiratory and heart rate (HR) responses of Pet-1(-/-) rodents and their littermates during episodic asphyxia at postnatal days 8-9 (P8-9).

Objective: The beneficial effects of hypertonic saline on neuronal survival and on cerebral blood flow have been shown in several animal models of global and focal brain ischemia. Because of the potential benefits of hypertonic solutions, it is hypothesized that hydroxyethyl starch enhances cerebral blood flow and improves long-term outcome after cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an animal model.
Design: Laboratory animal study.
