Published: March 2004

The overall objective of this study was to determine the effect of gossypol on human lymphocytes. Blood samples were taken from healthy donors and lymphocytes were cultured with various concentrations of gossypol (25-150 microM). The percentage of apoptotic cells was determined by assessing DNA fragmentation by agarose gel electrophoresis; morphological features of apoptosis were assessed by light microscopy. The concentrations of gossypol required to induce apoptosis in human lymphocytes without causing necrosis through cytotoxic effects were between 25-50 microM.

Background: Considering that peripheral blood biomarkers are prognostic predictors for several human tumors, this study aimed to comparatively analyze the association of hematological alterations with the incidence of epithelial dysplasia (ED) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) in male and female mice treated with 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide (4NQO) and ethanol (EtOH).

Methods: 120 C57Bl/6J mice (60 males and 60 females) were allocated to four groups (n = 15). They were treated firstly either with 5 mg/mL propylene glycol (PPG) or 100 μg/mL 4NQO in the drinking water for 10 weeks, followed by sterilized water (HO) or 8% EtOH (v/v) for 15 weeks, as follows: PPG/HO, PPG/EtOH, 4NQO/HO, and 4NQO/EtOH (CEUA-UFU, #020/21).

Objective: Global per capita alcohol consumption is increasing, posing significant socioeconomic and medical challenges also due to alcohol-related traumatic injuries but also its biological effects. Trauma as a leading cause of death in young adults, is often associated with an increased risk of complications, such as sepsis and multiple organ failure, due to immunological imbalances. Regulatory T cells play a crucial role in maintaining immune homeostasis by regulating the inflammatory response.

Advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) poses treatment challenges, especially where access to multi-kinase inhibitors and ICIs is limited by high costs and lack of insurance. This study evaluates the effectiveness of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) plus platinum-based chemotherapy as an alternative systemic treatment for advanced HCC. A retrospective analysis of advanced HCC patients treated with 5-FU plus platinum-based chemotherapy was conducted.

Lymph node sampling with endoscopic ultrasound fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) may affect treatment options for biliary tract cancers. Our aim is to clarify its utility and clinical significance and the factors associated with FNA cytology positivity. Seventy-one consecutive patients with biliary tract cancer who underwent EUS-FNA to diagnose lymphadenopathies from April 2012 to July 2021 were enrolled retrospectively.
