We review here the evolution and development of the earliest components of the cardiac pacemaking and conduction system (PCS) and the turnover or persistence of such cells into old age in the adult vertebrate heart. Heart rate is paced by upstream foci of cardiac muscle near the future sinoatrial junction even before contraction begins. As the tubular heart loops, directional blood flow is maintained through coordinated sphincter function in the forming atrioventricular (AV) canal and outflow segments. Propagation of initially peristaltoid contraction along and between these segments appears to be influenced by physical conditioning and orientation of inner muscle layers as well as by their slow relaxation; all characteristic of definitive conduction tissue. As classical elements of the mature conduction system emerge, such inner 'contour fibres' maintain muscular and electrical continuity between atrial and ventricular compartments. Elements of such primordial architecture are visible also in histological and optical electrical study of fish and frog hearts. In the maturing chick heart, cells within core conducting tissues retain early thymidine labels from the tubular heart stage into adult life, dividing only slowly, if at all. Preliminary evidence from mammals suggest similar function and kinetics for these 'oldest, toughest' cells in the hearts of all vertebrates.

Background: The Veterans Aging Cohort Study (VACS) Index is a summary measure of routinely obtained clinical variables that predicts numerous health outcomes. Since there are currently no tools to predict acute kidney injury (AKI) in persons with HIV (PWH), we investigated the association of preadmission VACS Index with hospital AKI in PWH.

Methods: We conducted an observational study of PWH hospitalized in a New York City health system between 2010-2019.

Effect of Macromolecular Architecture on Adhesion.

Langmuir

December 2024

Physics Department, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Moscow 119991, Russian Federation.

The behavior of single linear chains on a substrate is a well-studied area of polymer science. Herein, one of the most essential issues is the interaction of the chains with the substrate, which determines both macromolecular conformations near the substrate and adhesive properties of polymer materials. However, very little is known about the effect of macromolecular architecture on adhesion.

Study Question: Are live birth rates (LBRs) per woman following flexible progestin-primed ovarian stimulation (fPPOS) treatment non-inferior to LBRs per woman following the conventional GnRH-antagonist protocol in expected suboptimal responders undergoing freeze-all cycles in assisted reproduction treatment?

Summary Answer: In women expected to have a suboptimal response, the 12-month likelihood of live birth with the fPPOS treatment did not achieve the non-inferiority criteria when compared to the standard GnRH antagonist protocol for IVF/ICSI treatment with a freeze-all strategy.

What Is Known Already: The standard PPOS protocol is effective for ovarian stimulation, where medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) is conventionally administered in the early follicular phase for ovulatory suppression. Recent retrospective cohort studies on donor cycles have shown the potential to prevent premature ovulation and maintain oocyte yields by delaying the administration of MPA until the midcycle (referred to as fPPOS), similar to GnRH antagonist injections.

Frustrated Magnetism and Spin Anisotropy in a Buckled Square Net YbTaO.

Inorg Chem

December 2024

School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia 30332, United States.

The interplay between quantum effects from magnetic frustration, low-dimensionality, spin-orbit coupling, and crystal electric field in rare-earth materials leads to nontrivial ground states with unusual magnetic excitations. Here, we investigate YbTaO, which hosts a buckled square net of Yb ions with = 1/2 moments. The observed Curie-Weiss temperature is about -1 K, implying an antiferromagnetic coupling between the Yb moments.

Background: There is no standardization within hand and upper-extremity surgery regarding which patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are collected and reported. This limits the ability to compare or combine cohorts that utilize different PROMs. The aim of this study was to develop a linkage model for the QuickDASH (shortened version of the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand) and PROMIS PF CAT (Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Physical Function computerized adaptive testing) instruments to allow interconversion between these PROMs in a hand surgery population.
