This paper presents the fi rst comprehensive and quantitative study of substances that interfere with the forensic luminol test for blood. Two hundred and fifty substances have been selected on the basis of modern lifestyles and of contiguity with crime scenes. The intensity of the chemiluminescence produced by each substance has been measured relative to that of haemoglobin and the peak wavelength shift has also been determined. The following is a short list of nine substances that produce chemiluminescence intensities comparable with that of haemoglobin: turnips, parsnips, horseradishes, commercial bleach (NaClO), copper metal, some furniture polishes, some enamel paints, and some interior fabrics in motor vehicles. Care needs to be taken when the luminol test for blood is used in the presence of these substances.

Luminol is a well-known electrochemiluminescence (ECL) fluorophore that is applied in various sensing fields as an ECL reporter. Regulating the signal off/on transition of an ECL fluorophore offers great opportunities for sensors' design; however, such attempts on luminol are extremely scarce as it was regarded to lack promising modification sites. In this study, we developed four luminol derivatives with modification at the amine site and the enol site and systematically explored possible caging strategies to regulate ECL emission.

Previous research has demonstrated that a combined magnetic field (CMF) plays a critical role in modifying the properties of aqueous solutions, leading to an increase in the luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence of neutrophils. Using this model, the distant interaction between aqueous solutions was demonstrated, and the role of a CMF in the regulation of this phenomenon was established. In the current study, highly diluted (HD) phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) solution (the donor) was incubated with aqueous ethanol (the acceptor), both in a CMF-generating device and under geomagnetic field (GMF), for 0, 20, and 60 min.

A novel dual-mode electrochemiluminescence (ECL)/photoelectrochemistry (PEC) biosensor was developed for sensitive serotonin detection. In this system, the PEC signal was produced by CdS quantum dots (QDs), while the ECL signal originated from L-Au NPs (luminol decorated Au nanoparticles), thereby avoiding the external interference and signal fluctuations that typically arose from using the same materials for both signals. The presence of target serotonin initiated the non-enzymatic toehold-mediated strand displacement reaction (TSDR) on magnetic bead (MB), which was followed by catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) on the sensing interface, leading to the aggregation of many L-Au NPs.
