Colon diverticular disease is one of the most common pathologies of the western world; the aim of our review was to collect shortly but in a systematic way the main and more recent news on the etiopathogenesis, prevention, natural history, possible clinical presentations and complications of this disease without omitting, at the end, a short report on the diagnostic techniques and on the various medical and/or surgical therapy.

  • Over a 10-year period, 839 patient records were analyzed, revealing that most patients were males in their 30s to 50s, with common symptoms leading to the procedure being rectal bleeding, chronic abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
  • The results showed a high success rate in the procedure, with hemorrhoids being the most frequent discovery, along with indications of inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal tumors.

Background: Bleeding from anus is usually referred as rectal bleeding but actually rectal bleeding is defined as bleeding from lower colon or rectum, which means bleeding from a place distal to ligament of Treitz. This study was conducted to determine the frequency of different causes of rectal bleeding in patients at Ayub Teaching Hospital, Abbottabad.

Methods: One hundred and seventy-five patients with evidence of rectal bleed, without gender discrimination were selected by non-probability convenient sampling from the out-patient department and general medical wards.
