Object: This study addressed the integration of sensory short-term memory (SSTM) and motor planning (MP) in the lateral cerebellar region, where the dentate nucleus is localized, and in the prefrontal cortex (PF).
Methods: Boucher and Lewis's test of SSTM and MP was administered pre- and postsurgically to 8 patients of either sex, between 5 and 19 years of age, with tumors of the cerebellum, PF (area 9 medial) or the parieto-occipital region, and on one occasion to 8 corresponding controls.
Results: Whereas lesions of the midline portions of the cerebellum and of the parietal-occipital region did not appear to cause any cognitive defects, patients with lesions affecting either the lateral cerebellar region or PF exhibited statistically significant deficits of SSTM and MP.
Conclusions: The lateral cerebellum seems to act in concert with PF to integrate different cognitive activities related to holding objects in SSTM and planning motor strategies in reference to them.

Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD) is a rapidly progressive, immune-mediated syndrome characterized by the degeneration of Purkinje cells, often associated with the presence of antibodies targeting intracellular antigens within these cells. These autoantibodies are implicated in the induction of cytotoxicity, leading to Purkinje cell death, as demonstrated in in vitro models. However, the precise roles of antibodies and T lymphocytes in mediating neuronal injury remain a subject of ongoing research, with T cells appearing to be the main effectors of cerebellar injury.

Congenital melanocytic nevus (CMN) syndrome is a rare, non-familial neural ectodermal dysplasia characterized by CMN combined with extracutaneous abnormalities, predominantly involving the central nervous system (CNS). The pathogenesis of CMN syndrome is thought to result from early post-zygotic somatic mutations. CNS melanosis frequently affects the anterior temporal lobes, brainstem, cerebellum, and cerebral cortex.

Cytoreductive surgery and intraoperative, intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemoperfusion (hyperthermic intraperitoneal intraoperative chemotherapy) are commonly used for the management of peritoneal surface metastases. We describe a case of acute embolic infarcts in bilateral cerebellar lobes, cerebral peduncles, thalamus and left parietal lobe cortex in a postmenopausal woman in her 50s diagnosed with bilateral ovarian mucinous adenocarcinoma with peritoneal metastasis under general anaesthesia.

This narrative review examines lithium's effects on immune function, inflammation and cell survival, particularly in bipolar disorder (BD) in in vitro studies, animal models and clinical studies. In vitro studies show that high lithium concentrations (5 mM, beyond the therapeutic window) reduce interleukin (IL)-1β production in monocytes and enhance T-lymphocyte resistance, suggesting a protective role against cell death. Lithium modulates oxidative stress in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated macrophages by inhibiting nuclear factor (NF)-ƙB activity and reducing nitric oxide production.
