Mitogenic properties of the insulin derived from pig brain were compared with the action of pancreatic (standard) pig insulin and epidermal growth factor (EGF) using the culture of Swiss 3T3 cells. The brain insulin, likely as the pancreatic insulin, induced uptake of 14C-thymidine by resting cells in a dose-dependent manner at concentration of 0.5-2.0 micrograms/ml in culture medium. However, at equal concentrations of these hormones the proliferating effect of the brain insulin appeared to be 2-fold higher than the effect of the pancreatic hormone. At the same time the mitogenic action of both hormones was lower than that of EGF (10 ng/ml). The additive effect of the brain insulin and EGF, administered in combination, was more pronounced than the effect of the pancreatic insulin combined with EGF. The data obtained suggest a possible participation of brain insulin in the process of nerve cell proliferation.

This study compared the growth performance and stress responses of the genetically improved Abbassa Nile tilapia strain (G9; GIANT-G9) with a local commercial strain over 12 weeks, followed by exposure to stressors including high ammonia (10 mg TAN/L), elevated temperature (37 °C), and both for three days. Our previous studies revealed a mating attractant or possibly a pheromone released from molting reproductive mature female prawns, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, stimulates the expression of insulin-like androgenic gland hormones in a co-culture system. The released attractant is perceived by olfactory receptors with setae located on the short lateral antennules (slAn), which connect to the olfactory neuropil in the central nervous system (CNS) of male prawns. This neural signaling propagating through the CNS is mediated by at least four neuropeptides, namely neuropeptide F (NPF), short NPF (sNPF), tachykinin (TK), and allatostatin-A (ATS-A) whose transcripts have been detected in the present study.
