Tuberculosis (TB) increasingly appears in a multidrug-resistant form (MDR-TB) in Europe, too. Treatment remains difficult due to various side effects of the multi-drug-regimens. Ciprofloxacin is widely used as one of the few TB-second-line drugs. We report on the course of a ciprofloxacin-induced acute psychosis in a patient with MDR(isoniazid, streptomycin)-TB which resolved after cessation of ciprofloxacin treatment and introduction of a novel oxazolidone. Careful treatment considerations particularly in patients with additional predisposing factors to neuropsychiatric symptoms are recommended in the potentially dangerous MDR-TB, thus creating an enormous therapeutic challenge.

Kounis syndrome (KS), known as allergic myocardial infarction (MI), is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening disease characterized by acute coronary artery disease (CAD) in the setting of allergic reactions. KS is most frequently triggered by medication, and ciprofloxacin-induced KS-I is rarely reported. Here, we present a case of KS-I triggered by ciprofloxacin in a young female with no prior CAD.

Introduction: Treatments that currently exist in the strategic national stockpile for acute radiation syndrome (ARS) focus on the hematopoietic subsyndrome, with no treatments on gastrointestinal (GI)-ARS. While the gut microbiota helps maintain host homeostasis by mediating GI epithelial and mucosal integrity, radiation exposure can alter gut commensal microbiota which may leave the host susceptible to opportunistic pathogens and serious sequelae such as sepsis. To mitigate the effects of hematopoietic ARS irradiation, currently approved treatments exist in the form of colony stimulating factors and antibiotics: however, there are few studies examining how these therapeutics affect GI-ARS and the gut microbiota.

Pancytopenia is a hematologic condition characterized by a decrease in all three peripheral blood cell lines. There are many causes of pancytopenia, and the proper approach is required for accurate diagnosis. Brucellosis and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are both diseases that can initially present as pancytopenia, both of which require a targeted workup to diagnose.

This study was designed to investigate the impacts of Doxo alone and in combination with Cipro on the hepatic and cardiac CYP1A2, CYP2J3, and CYP3A1 mRNA levels. We also aimed to analyze the cardiac function by perfusing isolated rat hearts. Rats were given Doxo and/or Cipro in chronic (3-week) and acute (single-day) dosing schedules.
