The aromaticity of a representative sample of pro-aromatic radicals and its nitro, amino, hydroxyl and imine substituted derivatives has been analysed by means of multicentre delocalization indices (MCI) and nuclear-independent chemical shifts (NICS). Because of their radical character, these compounds may exhibit conflicting α/ß aromaticity, so that the contribution of α and β electrons to the MCI and NICS has been analysed separately and their values qualitatively interpreted in terms of the 2n+1/2n rule. All the monocyclic radicals investigated show conflicting α/β aromaticity.

Monocyclic π-aromatic compounds are ubiquitous throughout almost all fields of natural sciences-as synthons in industrial processes, as ligands of metal complexes for catalysis or sensing and as bioactive molecules. Planar organocycles stand out through their specific way of overcoming electron deficiency by a non-localizable set of (4n + 2)π electrons. By contrast, all-metal aromatic monocycles are still rare, as metal atoms prefer to form clusters with multiply bonded atoms instead.

A novel straightforward synthetic route to monocyclic 1,3,2,4-diazadiborinines has been developed by the sequential reaction of the NHC-coordinated iminoborane with bases and haloboranes (or borate). The first examples of monocyclic 1,3,2,4-diazadiborinines featuring different functional groups on the two B atoms have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Further derivatization of 4-bromophenyl-substituted 1,3,2,4-diazadiborinine has also been achieved, giving the biphenyl-substituted 1,3,2,4-diazadiborinine.

Tungsten (W), a widely used yet understudied emerging contaminant, forms oxyanions in aqueous environments, distinguishing it from conventional heavy metals. While dissolved organic matter (DOM) demonstrates considerable potential for W binding, DOM-W interactions remain largely unexplored. Of particular significance, yet frequently overlooked, are the conformational changes in DOM during W binding processes.
