Since its introduction in 1904, formocresol has become one of the most widely studied dental medicaments. In the United Kingdom, it is the preferred primary tooth pulpotomy medicament of the majority of Specialists in Paediatric Dentistry. Reports of adverse effects resulting from its clinical use are rare. This paper presents a case of premature exfoliation of primary molars that may be related to the use of formocresol in a multivisit pulpotomy technique.

A Case of Hypophosphatasia Started Enzyme Replacement Therapy Since Babyhood Stage.

Children (Basel)

Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Graduate School of Biomedical and Health Sciences, Hiroshima University, 1-2-3 Kasumi, Minami-ku, Hiroshima 734-8553, Japan.

Background: Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is an inherited disease caused by low activity of tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase. Dental characteristics include premature loss of primary teeth, enlarged pulp chambers, and enamel hypoplasia. Although enzyme replacement therapy with asfotase alfa was approved in 2015, there are few reports about the dental outcomes of this treatment.

We have studied the presence and frequency of micronuclei in exfoliated oral mucosa cells of full-term newborns and their association with maternal prenatal factors. We report an analytical, observational, cross-sectional, prospective study that includes 97 preterm infants (<37 weeks), 37 newborns from mothers with comorbidities, and 60 newborns from mothers without comorbidities, in a tertiary public hospital. Oral mucosa cells were collected within 24 h after birth.

The mixed dentition stage is a vital period characterized by significant physiological changes, including jaw growth, the development and eruption of permanent teeth, the exfoliation of primary teeth, and the maturation of surrounding soft tissues. These processes collectively ensure functional, esthetic, and stable occlusion. Disruptions during this stage, such as the premature loss of deciduous teeth, can lead to spacing or crowding issues and affect the dental arch length and the position of permanent teeth.

Operational Distal Shoe Appliance for Harmonious Occlusion: A Case Report.

Int J Clin Pediatr Dent

October 2024

Department of Pediatric and Prevntive Dentistry, Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences, KIIT (Deemed to be University), Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India.

Unlabelled: Preserving deciduous teeth till their natural exfoliation is important to maintain arch length in different dentition periods. Premature loss of primary teeth may cause discrepancy in arch length due to drifting of teeth and supraeruption of the opposite teeth, thereby hindering the development of a harmonious, functionally and esthetically acceptable dentition. This article describes the fabrication and clinical application of a modified functional distal shoe appliance used due to pathological obliteration of the primary/deciduous mandibular second molar prior to the eruption of the permanent mandibular first molar.

Functional Space Maintainer with Bilateral Early Loss of Primary Maxillary First Molars: NAFC.

Unlabelled: The primary dentition plays a very important role not only in the child's growth and development but also in the guidance and eruption of permanent teeth. Premature loss of a deciduous tooth or a group of teeth will lead to a wide range of implications in the permanent dentition. The best way to avoid these problems is to preserve the primary teeth in the arch until their normal time of exfoliation.
