AI Article Synopsis

  • The study aimed to outline the cytologic characteristics of NK/T-cell lymphoma through an analysis of three cases.
  • These lymphomas show a mixture of cell sizes, eccentric nuclei with noticeable nucleoli, and abundant clear to pale cytoplasm, along with often visible mitotic figures and necrotic debris.
  • Immunohistochemical markers like CD56, TIA-1, and EBER are valuable tools in aiding the diagnosis of NK/T-cell lymphoma.

Article Abstract

Objective: To describe the diagnostic cytologic features of NK/T-cell lymphoma.

Study Design: The cytologic features of 3 cases of natural killer cell (NK)/T-cell lymphoma were studied and correlated with histology. Immunohistochemistry for CD56, T-cell intracellular antigen (TIA-1) and EBV-encoded small nuclear RNAs (EBER) in situ hybridization was reviewed.

Results: The lymphomas have mixed-sized cells with eccentric, round to ovoid nuclei; 1 or 2 prominent nucleoli; and abundant, clear to pale, eosinophilic cytoplasm. Mitotic figures, necrotic debris and tingible body macrophages are common accompaniments. In fluid, the lymphoma cells appear more shrunken. A clot section of 1 case was positive for CD56, TIA-1 and EBER.

Conclusion: Helpful cytologic features for the diagnosis of NK/T-cell lymphoma are described. Immunohistochemistry for CD56, TIA-1 and EBER in situ hybridization are very helpful adjuncts for the diagnosis.

Background And Aims: Follicular-patterned thyroid tumors (FPTTs) are frequently encountered in thyroid pathology, encompassing follicular adenoma (FA), follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC), noninvasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP), and follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (fvPTC). Recently, a distinct entity termed differentiated high-grade thyroid carcinoma has been described by the 5th edition of the WHO classification of the thyroid tumors, categorized as either high-grade fvPTC, high-grade FTC or high-grade oncocytic carcinoma of the thyroid (OCA). Accurate differentiation among these lesions, particular between the benign (FA), borderline (NIFTP) and malignant neoplasms (FTC and fvPTC), remains a challenge in both histopathological and cytological diagnoses.

To investigate the combined application of cytology, cell block histology and immunohistochemistry to improve the diagnostic accuracy of solid pancreatic lesions in endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) samples. The pathological data of EUS-FNA in 311 cases of solid pancreatic lesions submitted to the Second Hospital of Hebei Medical University, Shijiazhuang, China from May 2019 to September 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. The cases included pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC, 172 cases), solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN, 12 cases), neuroendocrine tumors (PNET, 14 cases) and chronic pancreatitis (113 cases).

Purpose: The color of Papanicolaou-stained specimens is a crucial feature in cytology diagnosis. However, the quantification of color using digital images is challenging due to the variations in the staining process and characteristics of imaging equipment. The dye amount estimation of stained specimens is helpful for quantitatively interpreting the color based on a physical model.
