Geometric parameters of NiO films epitaxially grown on Ag(001) were determined using two independent experimental techniques and ab initio simulations. Primary beam diffraction modulated electron emission experiments determined that the NiO films grow with O on top of Ag and that the oxide/metal interface distance is d=2.3+/-0.1 A. Polarization-dependent x-ray absorption, at the Ni-K edge, determined the tetragonal strain (r( parallel )=2.046+/-0.009 A, r( perpendicular )=2.12+/-0.02 A) and d=2.37+/-0.05 A. Periodic slab model results agree with the experiments (d=2.40, r( parallel )=2.07, r( perpendicular )=2.10 A; the O-on-top configuration is the most stable).

The study and improvement of the corrosion resistance of materials used in concentrated solar power plants is a permanent field of research. This involves determining their chemical stability when in contact with heat transfer fluids, such as molten nitrate salts. Various studies indicate an improvement in the corrosion resistance of iron-based alloys with the incorporation of elements that show high reactivity and solubility in molten nitrate salts, such as Cr and Mo.

Article Synopsis
  • Interfaces in heterostructures significantly affect the operation of electronic devices, impacting elements like capacitors and transistors used for memory and logic applications.
  • The study uses operando off-axis electron holography to measure trapped charges at dielectric and metal/dielectric interfaces in HfO- and AlO-based nanocapacitors under applied electric fields.
  • The findings reveal a high density of trapped charges at these interfaces that influences the device's electric field distribution, establishing a linear relationship between trapped charges and the applied bias for the first time.

The rising incidence of infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria highlights the urgent need for innovative bacterial eradication strategies. Metal ions, such as Zn and Co, have bactericidal effects by disrupting bacterial cell membranes and interfering with essential cellular processes. This has led to increased attention toward metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as potential nonantibiotic bactericidal agents.

OH Regulator of Amorphous CrO on Defect-Rich Ultrafine Pd Nanowires Boosts Electrocatalytic Ethanol Oxidation.

Small

December 2024

Electrocatalysis & Nanomaterial Laboratory, College of Materials Science and Engineering, Qingdao University of Science and Technology, Qingdao, 266042, P. R. China.

Reasonable construction of high activity and selectivity electrocatalysts is crucial to achieve efficient ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). However, the oxidation of ethanol tends to produce CO species that poison the active centers of the EOR electrocatalysts. Herein, a unique amorphous CrO-protected defect-rich ultrafine Pd nanowires (CrO-Pd NWs) is developed.

Schottky Interface Enabled Electrospun Rhodium Oxide Doped Gold for Both pH Sensing and Glucose Measurements in Neutral Buffer and Human Serum.

Langmuir

October 2024

Department of Chemistry, School of Science, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, No. 111 Ren'ai Road, Suzhou Industrial Park, Dushu Lake Higher Education and Innovation Park, Suzhou 215123, Jiangsu Province, People's Republic of China.

This study has focused on adjusting sensing environment from basic to neutral pH and improve sensing performance by doping electrodeposited gold (Au) with metal oxide for nonenzymatic glucose measurements in forming a Schottky interface for superior glucose sensing with detailed analysis for the sensing mechanism. The prepared sensor also holds the ability to measure pH with the identical electrospun metal oxide-electrodeposited Au, which composed a dual sensor (glucose and pH sensor) through applying chronoamperometry and open circuit potential methods. The rhodium oxide nanocoral structure was fabricated with an electrospinning precursor solution, followed by a calcination process, and it was mixed with electrodeposited nanocoral gold to form the Schottky interface by constructing a p-n type heterogeneous junction for improved sensitivity in glucose detection.
