We show that nonlinear directional couplers with variable coupling coefficients can be used to compose a special kind of switching matrix. The switching matrix can be controlled by the signal itself or by a strong pump. Light routing is realized by adjustment of the power of the signal or the pump. Because light routing is based on the optical Kerr effect, ultrafast routing is possible.

One of the main drivers of fibrotic diseases is epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT): a transdifferentiation process in which cells undergo a phenotypic change from an epithelial state to a pro-migratory state. The cytokine transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) has been previously shown to regulate EMT. TGF-β1 binds to fibronectin (FN) fibrils, which are the primary extracellular matrix (ECM) component in renal fibrosis.

Versatile and robust transparent polymer film with preprogrammed diffusion and bidirectional irreversible fluorescence for sequential information encryption.

The materials currently available for information encryption often suffer from low transparency, poor mechanical strength, and a reliance on single decryption conditions, which limits their security and hence application potential. To address these challenges, we developed a transparent, mechanically robust polymer film inspired by the camouflage and communication strategies of the glass squid. In this film, 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (DHTA) and zinc acetate dihydrate are integrated into a crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol-glutaraldehyde (PVA-GA) matrix to achieve bidirectional irreversible fluorescence and sequential decryption.

Skeletal muscle function gradually declines with aging, presenting substantial health and societal challenges. Comparative analysis of how aging affects fast- and slow-twitch muscles remains lacking. We utilized 20-month-old mice to reveal the aging effects on muscle structure and fiber composition, followed by bulk RNA sequencing for fast- and slow-twitch muscles and integration with human single-cell RNA sequencing dataset providing a comparative analysis across species.

This paper investigates regional proportional-integral-derivative consensus of switched positive multi-agent systems with multiple equilibria. A distributed proportional-integral-derivative control protocol is developed by integrating the communication protocol, agent state, and consensus error. A novel switched positive consensus error system is established and analyzed using copositive Lyapunov functions.

Human exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) poses significant health risks, contributing to cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, and cancer. Measurement of VOC metabolites (VOCm) in urine by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is a preferred method for VOCm analysis; however, existing methods encounter challenges related to sensitivity, throughput, and analyte coverage. In addition to VOCm, the measurement of tobacco alkaloids (TAm) is critical to account for tobacco use in population-based studies.
