Published: June 2003

Objective: To study the morphological features of the lungs obtained from autopsies of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) patients.

Methods: Bilateral lungs from 7 patients died from SARS were carefully studied grossly and microscopically. All tissues from these cases were routinely processed and carefully studied.

Results: All lungs from these cases were extremely expanded and became solid. Microscopically, the edema and fibrin exudates in the alveoli was the most common findings, especially in the early phase of the disease. The hyaline membrane was almost always present in the lungs of these cases. The organization of intra-alveolar fibrin exudates along with the interstitial fibrosis led to obliteration of alveoli and consolidation of lungs. The desquamation and hyperplasia of alveolar lining cells was also apparent. Foci of haemorrhage and lobular pneumonia, even diffuse fungal infection were frequently seen in these specimens. Micro-thrombus were easily found in these lungs.

Conclusions: The lung of SARS from autopsy is characterized by edema, intra-alveolar fibrin exudates, hyaline membrane formation, organization of intra-alveolar exudates and fibrosis, which lead to the obliteration of alveoli and consolidation of lungs.

: This study aimed to evaluate the role of A-PRF (advanced platelet-rich fibrin) in the enhancement of wound healing and protecting the periodontal health of mandibular second molars after the extraction of mandibular third molars. Additionally, the study assessed the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of mandibular second molars as markers of inflammation. : Twenty-five systemically healthy adult patients with bilateral removal of impacted mandibular third molars were included.

Pericardial effusion in an Indian context: clinical insights and dynamics from a tertiary care centre.

BMC Cardiovasc Disord

Faculty of General Medicine, Department of General Medicine, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, 576104, Karnataka, India.

Background: Pericardial effusion (PE) indicates the build-up of fluid within the pericardial sac, which encases the heart. The present study was undertaken to assess the clinical profile, etiology of pericardial effusion and to determine the correlation of cardiac tamponade and constrictive pericarditis with etiology.

Methods: A prospective observational hospital based longitudinal study was undertaken among the 88 newly diagnosed and known patients of pericardial effusion who are above 18 years.

Subconjunctival trypsin injection for anterior chamber fibrin exudates in eyes with globe rupture following vitrectomy.

Int J Ophthalmol

November 2024

Department of Retina and Vitreous, Jingliang Eye Hospital, Guangxi Medical University, Nanning 530021, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the safety and effectiveness of subconjunctival injections of trypsin versus dexamethasone (DEX) for treating fibrin exudates in patients after globe rupture repair.
  • A total of 52 patients were treated with either trypsin or DEX, with results indicating that both treatments led to similar levels of exudate absorption, but trypsin had a quicker absorption time and was less irritating for patients.
  • Overall, trypsin was found to be a more comfortable treatment option than DEX, with no adverse effects reported and stable intraocular pressure.

Phosphoglyceride crystal deposition disease is a rare condition occurring in soft tissues, resulting in scarring and affecting the bones, making preoperative differentiation from malignant tumors challenging. Here, we describe a case of phosphoglyceride crystal deposition disease initially suspected to be a malignant ovarian tumor before surgery. A 50-year-old woman with a history of three cesarean sections presented with lower abdominal pain.
