Although the therapy of airway obstruction with theophylline is well established, unwanted side effects can occur: overdosage and reactions to ethylendiamine, an additive to increase the solubility of theophylline. Frequent measurements of the theophylline blood levels and the use of ethylendiamine free preparations can avoid such problems. Therefore, we studied the validity of a new immunochromatographic bed side assay (Acculevel) prior and after infusion of sodiumglycinate-theophylline (Theospirex) in 13 patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Although theophylline levels increased above the therapeutic range (20 mg/L) in half of the patients after the infusion of 400 mg Theospirex in 1 hour, no toxic effects could be denoted. In addition, no influence on blood pressure and heart rate were found. We observed good correlations between this new immunochromatographic assay and theophylline levels measured with 2 well established reference methods (HPLC and turbidimetry, r = 0.87 and 0.91, respectively), although Acculevel revealed slightly higher values. Thus, the use of sodium-glycinate-theophylline and the new, fast bed side test system seems of practical importance in the therapy of COPD by potentially avoiding undesirable side effects.

The interrelationship of thyroid volume and function with features of cardiovascular dysfunction has already been investigated but some aspects remain unclear, especially in terms of subclinical cardiovascular dysfunction in euthyroid patients. Intima-media thickness (IMT) measurement in ultrasound B-mode imaging in different vascular beds (most frequently within the common carotid artery) is one of the most important tools for the detection of subclinical atherosclerosis in both clinical practice and research. This article aimed to present the results of our research on the association between the thyroid evaluation parameters and the IMT measured in both the carotid and femoral arteries in euthyroid patients aged 18 to 65 years taking into account the influence of diabetes, hypertension, and excess body mass.

L-citrulline (L-CIT), a precursor to L-arginine (L-ARG), is a key contributor to the nitric oxide (NO) signaling pathway. Endothelial dysfunction, characterized by deficient nitric oxide synthesis, is implicated in the pathogenesis of various neonatal conditions such as necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) associated pulmonary hypertension (PH). This review summarizes the current evidence around the possible role of L-CIT supplementation in the treatment of these conditions.

The Indian subcontinent has emerged as a natural habitat to several cyanobacterial taxa which have been explored and described in the past few years using a polyphasic approach. Various new genera and species of Nostoc morphotypes, heteropolar unbranched as well as branched heterocytous cyanobacteria, have been described from various parts of India such as the central mainland, temperate hill stations of extreme northern India, and the biodiversity hotspots of northeast India. Konkan, a small strip of land bounded by Arabian sea on the west and Sahyadri mountains on the east, has various habitats such as coastal beds, old monuments, freshwater lakes, and rivers; however, this region has been less charted in modern cyanobacterial systematics, relative to others.

Background: Currently, there is no clear standard for the surgical options for Evans-Jensen Type IV intertrochanteric femur fractures in elderly patients over 65 years old. This study aims to retrospectively analyze and compare the early postoperative limb function and quality of life of patients treated with total hip arthroplasty (THA) and proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) for this type of fracture. We hypothesize that there is no significant difference in complications and postoperative recovery between the two surgical methods.
