Very limited data exist on transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) in the setting of a preexisting mitral prosthesis regarding the technique, potential complications, and outcomes. Here, we report two cases of transfemoral TAVI with a self-expanding bioprosthesis (CoreValve; Medtronic, Inc) in patients who had previously undergone mitral valve replacement (one with an Omniscience and one with a St. Jude prosthesis).

Based on a single hospital experience of heart valve implantation from 1965 to 2009, the superiority of prosthetic heart valves including Starr-Edwards caged ball valves, Omniscience aortic tilting disc valves, and St. Jude Medical bileaflet valves are reviewed. This review discusses the prominent antithrombogenicity of the Starr-Edwards model 1200 aortic prosthesis under selected conditions, the relatively rarely thrombosed (despite its decreased opening angle) Omniscience aortic valve, the long-term outcomes 10 as well as 30 years after St.

This study was designed to evaluate the long-term clinical results of the Omniscience tilting disc valve. Omniscience valves were implanted in 51 patients (mean age, 50 +/- 10 years); 18 had aortic valve, 24 had mitral valve, and 9 had both aortic and mitral valve replacements. Oral warfarin potassium and dipyridamole were prescribed as our anticoagulant therapy.

The past 50 years have witnessed remarkable progress in the development of safe, hemodynamically favorable mechanical heart valves. Starr-Edwards aortic and mitral ball valves introduced in the mid-1960s, continue to be used successfully worldwide. More than 100,000 Omniscience and Omnicarbon tilting-disc valves have been implanted since 1978 with essentially no mechanical failure; similar results have been obtained with more than 300,000 Hall-Kaster and Medtronic-Hall tilting-disc valves over the past 25 years.
