Background: A giant encephalocele associated with Chiari malformation is a rare congenital anomaly from a cephalad neural tube defect. Early prenatal diagnosis and parental counseling are essential; as early surgical intervention can improve outcomes.
Methods: Between 2010 and 2023, twenty-seven newborns out of 43,815 delivered at our institution were diagnosed with encephaloceles, including seven cases of giant encephalocele associated with Chiari malformation type III.

Occipital condyle fractures (OCFs) can be seen in around 4-19% of patients who suffer from cervical spine trauma. Anderson and Montesano system type III OCFs, which are avulsion fractures, are potentially unstable and operative. This study evaluates the management of type III OCFs at our institution over a 22-year period.

Background: Congenital craniovertebral junction anomalies (CCVJAs) encompass a diverse range of conditions characterized by distorted anatomy and significant variation in the pathways of neurovascular structures. This study aims to assess the safety and feasibility of tailoring posterior fixation for CCVJAs through intraoperative CT-based navigation.
Methods: An in-depth retrospective analysis was conducted on eight patients diagnosed with CCVJAs (excluding Arnold-Chiari malformation).

The contribution of age-related structural brain changes to the well-established link between aging and cognitive decline is not fully defined. While both age-related regional brain atrophy and cognitive decline have been extensively studied, the specific mediating role of age-related regional brain atrophy on cognitive functions is unclear. This study introduces an open-source software tool with a graphical user interface that streamlines advanced whole-brain mediation analyses, enabling researchers to systematically explore how the brain acts as a mediator in relationships between various behavioral and health outcomes.

Chiari malformations, characterized by the herniation of cerebellar tonsils through the foramen magnum, are complex neurosurgical conditions that pose significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Traditional interventions, such as foramen magnum decompression, have been the mainstay of treatment but are not universally effective, especially in cases with underlying atlantoaxial instability. However, recent studies highlight the importance of atlantoaxial instability in their pathogenesis, shifting the therapeutic focus towards atlantoaxial fixation.
